If you've ever been poorly equipped on a camping trip, you're familiar with this: It's raining. You have no paper, all the wood's wet, there's nothing around like dry grass to get a fire going, you only have one change of clothes, you forgot one of your tent poles, the campstove's only good enough for a day's worth of meals, and it's raining like the dickens.

But somehow.. you manage. You figure out how to do all kinds of shit, and your skills at maintaining a fire with shitty wood increases. You make do with whatever you have and allow your natural innate human genius to fill in the gaps.

But when you have tons of shit, you use it up, waste it, drop it on the ground and don't eat it cause it's covered in sand.. For example in Canada we have a lot of wood. We ship it out by the boatload to other countries who buy it for dirt cheap and then sell it back to us in the form of chessboards and bed frames. We could be getting some value-added stuff going on, shops could be churning out tons of furniture or whatever, and we could be getting just as much money but leaving WAY more trees standing.

But as long as it's there, we'll just burn it off like crazy until we notice the supply's starting to dwindle. Then suddenly we'll get by on a fraction of what we had previously. Too bad.

Everybody does this. Too bad we don't have a strong innate ethic of efficiency. We wouldn't waste so much energy as individuals or as a society.

"but it's okay! once we realize we have hardly any trees left, we'll HAVE to reduce our uptake to a fraction of what we had previously!"

by that point nature is gone for you and your children to enjoy : /

i try to waste the least amount as possible, as i am very aware that our natural resources are fleeting and i dont want to participate in the raping of our beautiful earth.

recycling is one way.

using less is better.

'raping' is such a loaded word, please, refrain from using such emotionally-charged words...

That's kind of like fossil fuels as well, we know they are going to be gone eventually, possibly within the next 100 years yet people are still using them like crazy. Eventually we will develop a new way to run our cars so that we don't use as much fossil fuels, in the same way I hope we develop new technology so that we don't have to use so much wood.

the difference is, trees grow again, in as little as 30 years. you know how long it takes to 'grow' some more fossil fuels? ...me neither, but fuckin mega-long. so long that for all intents and purposes, infinitely long. so the new technology so that we don't use so much wood is all well and good, but we will HAVE to figure out new tech for running cars because fossil fuels are limited. there's only so much, and no more

true, however, the scarcity of the fossil fuels will greatly hamper if not eliminate our ability to spacefare. fossil fuels are used to manufacture more than just gasoline. without these resources we may not ever colonize off planet.
we must leave the earth before we are no longer capable of doing so. if we don't, we never will. ecological awareness is necessary; we must all try to reduce the amounts of materials we use, but our western lifestyle can continue at its level of quality nonetheless. avoid products with unecessary packaging, turn down the heat a couple of degrees and go without the a/c.
governments should allow tax breaks or other incentives to private citizens who install high efficiency furnaces and windows. with these sorts of precautions, we cannot only maintain our good fortune of first world luxury and aid other developing countries to advance to our standard of living and get into space on a large scale.
unfortunately we will have to have some sort of disaster of biblical proportions to force us to concentrate on leaving earth for the stars. unless . . .

tke

efficiency on a large scale takes pre planning, which seems what you are adressing is a lack of planning. If people thought before they acted, how much better would it be? A lot better!
