Cutting the prices

Inoculated, commercial dowels are so expensive. Does it make sense to cut them into 2-3 parts and then stick them into logs?

they're not easy to cut. it makes better sense to sterilise some fresh dowels, spawn them with the bought ones, and treble your numbers.

About dowels, even at home depot you can only buy little packs with not too many dowels for a lot of money. I was wanting to go into massive dowel production this fall but the cost of dowels seemed prohibitive. Does anyone have a good source for bulk dowels?

You can get dowels by the Ks here: http://www.midwestdowel.com/index.php

In my area I pay 2c for each.

Is there a tek for producing dowels directly from dowels?
I want to skip the agar and grain phase.

Not sure, but maybe it is no problem to produce dowels oneself ?
Anybody here that knows how dowels are produced (booknik) ?

Someone told me that he soaks the sterilized (dry?) dowels in peroxided water and inoculates them in the open air.

So Shirley, I did what you said, and after 45 days this is what I have:

It worked well for both Pl. pulmonarius and Shiitake. Zero contamination, a thousand dowels.

I use birch dowels from a local mill, about the same price as the link wideweb posted. It works very well to get some of the chunky coir and use it to fill in the gaps around the dowels. A bit of sawdust works good too.
