Need a good portable metronome recommendation
    #3615689 - 01/12/05 01:29 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hi folks with the semester rolling around I've decided to get serious about my piano practice again. This means I'll need a metronome.

Unfortunately I only have experience with metronomes that plug into the wall. Anyone have any recommendations on a good, portable metronome? Features I'm looking for are:

- Moderately priced (~$50 or less)
- No flashing lights or other distracting things. (also includes no DINGS when setting the times)
- A good array of tempo settings (preferabbly from 40 to 200)
- precise (preferabbly 2 or less beats per tempo setting i.e. 80 - 82 - 84 etc)
- Ticking/whipping sound is the best. No strange beeping or something that is too electronic.
- and of course, portable!

If you have a model that you've used and admired, let me know. For reference, I'm accustomed to your traditional bakelite Franz metronome with the whipping sound. Something basic like that would suit my needs perfectly.

Thanks.

I don't know, go look in music stores, they usually have lots of different kinds. I live in a smallish town, and there's one music store here, and they have all sorts of metronomes---from the fully mechanical wind-up kind with the weight you slide up and down on the arm (always a favorite) to weird electronic ones with headphone jacks (I wish mine had a jack) and your choice of four different sounds, volume control, flashing light if you want, etc.

my current metronome is a sort of weird squat cone-shaped one, with volume control, quite a range of tempi (can't remember), 2 different sounds (I only really use one, never seen the need for more), and a light at the top which I find handy. I think it cost under $50 Canadian, including applicable taxes
