I don't know, personally I didn't like it as much as mer de noms. My fav is vanishing, but that would be because it was the first song they played on tour and which stood out from the others., hmmm..i don't know maybe i should give it more of a chance...

A more subdued album with fewer tracks that stand out, but I think as a whole it has better musicianship, and unlike Mer de Noms, it has no tracks that I don't like (I never much cared for Sleeping Beauty).

I liked Mer De Noms better. I bought the new APC as well.. I forget the title but its not that good.. That JL cover was butchered like a mofo on grilling day. Lacks the "hardness" I desire. Paz rocks!!!!!

i also own mer de noms, but i dont really listen to that whole cd all the way through like 13th step. when i wanna rock out, i put in mer de noms, but 13th step is much more chill. gotta love that tune "f*ck your god" (and dont flame that song unless you know the true meaning behind it) and 3 libras. all in all, i have listened to mer de noms more.the newest cd isnt so great cause it was rushed out for election day.(probably why most of the songs are covered)i have the three cds, the remix, and the dvd

Agreed, that is a very stupid comparison. APC is not Maynard's band! It was formed by Billy Howerdel, who writes most if not all of the music.

Billy is the composer, but Maynard still writes most of the lyrics.

I love Thirteenth Step! Awesome album. "Pet" is my favorite song. Badass all the way. And "Gravity" is a beautiful song. Actually most of the songs are great. I may even like it more than Mer de nom. Billy Howerdell is a great songwriter, who combines well with a great lyricist such as Maynard. APC is a top-notch band!

I tripped on acid at an APC show right after Thirteenth Step was released. 3 hits of elephant blotter and let me tell you I was taken to new dimensions that night. I was so sensitive to how POWERful the sound was, it really touched my soul. I experienced a full range of emotions almost undescribable in those few hours.
The Noose, Vanishing, and Gravity are absolute genius.
Ares and I literally almost died to the song Gravity driving back from Daytona one morning after a psychedelic night, and I had nodded off, but I remember half-consciously when this song came on that Ares nodded off as well, and we were going at least 60 mph and the car drifted off the road before she snapped back into consciousness and tried to correct herself which sent us fishtailing into a wall of shrubbery lining the highway which saved us from flipping. 2 of her tires were instantly blown, and as synchronicity would have it, a guy behind us pulled over and gave us a 30 mile ride back to Ocala, where he smoked a few bowls with us to bring us back to reality.
So yeah, this record is very special to me.

Also listen to the lyrics of Gravity... and then consider we almost died to this song. It's really quite amazing.

ok a couple of things i think people asked or were misinformed about. maynard writes the lyrcis to the songs. im sure he gets help with them, but most of them are credited to him and his feelings. as for paz, she left to billy corgan's band swan and then i think she left that to start her own band. i know she wants to be a music teacher. the new cd, emotiv, has paz in at least one of the tracks. i think shes in a few. i dont really feel like looking it up, but there are paz appearances in emotive. and i got to see APC in maynard's favorite place to play. Red Rocks Ampitheatre. They ended the tour there cause they like it so much. you cant even imagine how good of a show it was.danny lohner from nin showed up and played, so did a giant lobster playing the guitar. good stuff
