Empathy for Disaster Victims
    #3613037 - 01/11/05 02:01 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

While most all of us agree the tsuswami, er tsunami, vicitms are in dire need of aid and compassion, what should we think of those who deliberately put themselves in the way of harm?

There are regular fires and mudslides in Malibu. There are frequent hurricanes along the Florida coast. Certain rivers flood regularly claiming victims every year. Some villages are built at the foot of active volcanoes.

It had been 40 years since the last major tsunami to hit that region. What if one hit every four years, would you feel as sad?

A boy was just killed in an avalanche at Mt. Charleston. What was his responsibility? I have skied once in my life and yet know that it is much safer to wait a few days after a fresh heavy snow to let things settle out.

I had an acquaintence killed by a great white shark while surfing near the seal breeding area. Sad, but...

People gamble with nature and lose. Sometimes it is somewhat foreseeable and sometimes not. Do you draw the line anywhere on your compassion-o-meter?

So a kid climbs over and over again on a tree, everyone warns him
that he will fall, and he does, so are you going to say..It's his own fault we should not pitty him, or are you going to say, I hope his leg heals soon.
Compassion is not about the event of falling, it's about the
broken leg, nothing more

I would not say that as my "hoping" will not accelerate his body's repair time. While this seems like a social nicety, it is the repetition of a false myth.

Would you help him get to the hospital? Or let him lay there and say "It was your own fault"

... I would do both.

You can't get him to hospital and let him lay on the ground at the same time.

I would let him lay on the ground and suffer for awhile while telling him how stupid he is.  Then he would really appreciate the ride to the hospital.  :smirk:

But that's not at the same time.

I gave the answer to that problem already

Back to our subject:

Yes I do. Money matters a lot in most situations.
There are thousands of people living at the foot of the Etna, the famous Sicilian volcano. But guess what, the houses near the volcano are much cheaper, and those who live there aren't especially rich...
Same thing in South East Asia: even if they knew the risks of a tsunami, they have little choice but to live there. The tourist business makes them live, and tourists usually cluster on and near the beach rather than miles into the land.
Look at Bagladesh: most of the country gets flooded every year, but it's already overcrowded and they hardly get enough to eat...

Let's say that generally, some people don't have many options. Usually they're the same people that aren't educated enough to make radical choices as to moving away from potential risk. Add to that a slightly more resigned/fatalistic attitude toward life and its hardships (an attitude often found where conditions are dire).

So my conclusion is: in those cases, they have my compassion.

As for the affluent and educated assholes who buy a house in a mudslide area or on a well known volcano route (for whatever reasons: pretty sights, cheap property or other) and complain when it's ripped to pieces, well, they make for a good laugh.

There have been a lot of people that felt little compassion for America when those buildings collaped. People rationalized it like:
that's what they get for poking their nose because of oil, they felt like they are untouchable etc.
But that kind of point of view is very inhumane. Who cares who was provoked and why, people have died and that's all there is to it.
I don't think any of those people left in the building were thinking about politics at that moment. It was a tragedy.

As for the affluent and educated assholes ...

Why would you perceive a successful person to be worthy of less compassion than a poor person? Is this a variant of the faulty "money is evil" concept?

i think the point hes trying to make is that the rich person has a choice to not live there....where as the poor do not

wrestler made the point.

Nothing to do with 'evil money', but with options. When have the option to not take the risk and and go for it anyway for bad reasons AND you moan afterward when the risk has materialized on your ass, then yes, you're an asshole.
Maybe my statement was unclear: they're not assholes for being rich and educated, but for complaining after having made avoidable bad choices.
