Psilocybe coprophila pictorial

Went out to the subb field today to see what I could see, I'm tired of waiting for the weiliis to come back :) Needless to say, it is much too hot here in the southeast for any subb fruitings, so I came out empty handed almost. I did however find lots of Ps. coprophila. I took a few pics and figured I'd share. I know these aren't active, but they sure are purty :) And I swear I was getting light blue stains on a few of them, could be wishful sight though?
Here are a few pics from todays pickings:

Well, there alot of confusion surrounding this mushroom and its activity, I'll try my best to set it straight.
Ps. coprophila was at first reported weakly active some time ago. Now the general thought is they are not active. Paul stamets suggests some strains might possibly be latent psilocybin producers, but most, if not all, are completely inactive. Even the strains reported to be weakly active are thought to be from a possible mixed collection with another psilocybin active species.
So bottom line is they are not active, and if by some odd chance a few strains are weakly active, its not worth the amount needed to consume in order to feel effects.

I agree AIRDOG, I have always thought that P. coprophila has looked very similar to P. mexicana, the cap just isn't quite bell shaped enough, and the stem is more like a Pan. subb stem than a psilocybe stem. I wish so badly they were active, I am finding truckloads of them right now. Oh well, maybe thats a good sign that the cubies are also fruiting. I've only been out to the cow pastures twice this year so far, and have found nadda. Going to go out again this weekend and see what the lizard can see :)

Another difference LK is that the stems of the P. coprophila are usually very short and the stems of P. mexicana grow very tall.
And P. mexicana grows in manured soil not directly out of manure like P. coprophila.
There are also several other macroscopic and microscopic differences between the two species.
Anyway Lizard King, I sent you a pm but could not tell if you received it. So I will asked you here.
May I have permission to post two of your P. coprophila images at my site for refernce. I will give you credit and immotalize them on a Cd-Rom on a later date, that is if you okay it.
Mj
By the way, cool pics.
Have a shroomy day and may all of your days be shroomy.

Hmmm....I don't have a PM from you, probably didn't send or something.
Its not a problem MJ, use whatever you like, I have a few more coprophila pics about a month or so back in this forum if you do a search. Take what you want :)

Those were sun faded coprophila, I thought the same thing myself when I found that patch, but after checking they all had a seperable pellicle and the gills were visible through the cap(not a trait of Panaeolus that I've seen before)
No subbs though, the last subbs found in that field were the ones you picked GG, and the same for the weilii. Things got hot and dry around here after you left. Every city around us has been flooded this summer, but not us, we remain hot and dry :(
I drove down to Wizards two weeks after you left, stayed with him for the weekend. He wasn't able to make it out to any fields with us, be we were pointed in the right direction. Me and my friend hit the fields the next day and only found a handful of cubies, wasn't too much fruiting when I was last down there. Seems now that ya'll are getting plenty of rain these days, maybe I'll head that way again in a few weeks and give it another go.
Take care,
LK,
