to sterilize or pasteurize?
    #3612231 - 01/11/05 11:10 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I have read tons and tons of teks and recently ran across a few that said NOT to sterilize casing. so i just wanted to get some feed back on the general con-census of the "experts". Should you sterilize or pasteurize your casing mix? (in my case ((this time around)) jiffy mix)

Huh sounds like the straw?
I can't see why you couldnt sterilize the casing...

theres the old schoolers who advise to pasteurize the casing mix,
but myself never encountered problems with sterilizing it.

and id say more than 3/4 of all the people here also sterilize theirs.

I personally prefer pasturizing all casing mixes.

Either works. Since "casing" material has no "nutes", there is nothing in it for a contam to feed on.

The purpose of a casing mixture is to provide a cover, growth base & something that will hydrate easily & evenly - to provide moisture to the substrate under it.

Some prefer one way, some the other. My foaf has done both & now sterilzes his casing mixtures. Some mushrooms require contact with external bacteria to initiate pinning & fruit. Cubes don't.

Sterilizing KILLS any contam that may lurk in a casing mixture. Any possible contam that settles on it, will not have nutes, so it is not optimal for contam germination & growth.

Where contams get in (generally), is after you have had a flush & harvested. Twist & pull harvesting fruits opens up spots that contain nutes. If a contam IS THERE, it will germinate & grow.

So, when you harvest, PATCH well to MINIMIZE that exposure.

I for one am a firm believer in "sterilization" of all media i.e. casings , and bulk subs . Many will say is not good , but I have had good luck doing it my way . YES it does allow for nasties to have a chance to set in , but only if clean enviro is not supplied .
Pasturization allows for some benefical microbes to stay alive that aide the mush culture fight off contams .This is why many prefer it over full blown sterilization .
Sterilization kills all , I like this becasue why allow for anything to interfere with a pure myc colony that does all its fighting of contams .
Is preference thing IMHO .

Is that a 100% true statement ?
That casing has zero nutes ?
Or should we word this as minimzed nute value .
It is a plant product ...
This has had me puzzled now for some time , and have wanted to bring it up with you .

the casing layer has to have zero nutes in order for the mycelium not to
check it out as food but as, well, the end of the food

basically, cubes can also fruit from straight rye itself,
but it will do way better with a zero nute layer.

for example, vermiculite, you can case with straight verm and it has
zero nutes.
or take coir, same.

barely any, especially considering the mix with verm that thinns them out even more.

Nutes in "coir" are so miniscule it matters not. Husk is by natures design nute free as possible, otherwise critters & folks would eat husk & all.

Theres probably more nutrition in the water you put in your casing mix (if you use tap that is) then in the coir.

Like it's been said a casing layer is pretty much nutrient free understand that doesn't mean totally zero nutes it's purpose is not so much a protection from contams layer as many of you know fully colonized substrate is very contam resistant, the purpose is two fold #1 a major water resevoir for developing fruitbodies and just as important even though cubies don't require a casing layer to fruit like most species that the casing layer is optional they will fruit much more prolifically if one is added this is because of the second reason for using a casing, it provides a humid microclimate that is absolutely perfect for primordia/pin formation. BTW if a casing layer is allowed to become acidic either through the use of a unbuffered peat based casing or the result of many flushes accumulation of metabolic wastes created by the shrooms themselves you will find trich not far behind if spores are at all present in the atmosphere and it can thrive. :frown: Just want to add a little more good info to this very good thread! GL guys
