Hey everyone.. just a little confused as to whether I've got a contam or this is normal.. I think because I've had too high humidity or whatever the top of the cake fuzzed - and it has little black specks on the tips of the fuzz, also towards the bottom of the cake there's a light-greeny-blue colour on the surface of what used to be white non-fluffy mycelium. Contam? Or just bruising? Thanks!

Well JJ, It sounds like it's contaminated to me. On the other hand, these could be pins on top and just bruising on the mycelium.

you got some fucked up wierd contam. you say that theres some fluffy stuff with black tips? i got this one time when the cakes got too hot while colonizing and the mycelium died but i still birthed them. soon there were these huge balls of mould in my terrarium.
i may, fucking drop something natural somewhere and it might grow into another piece of shit like you. i dont recognize any of you fucking people, youre not real, you came out of comic books.

but um... see.. the other day when I wiped some excess water off the top the mycelium turned black (or really dark blue maybe?) and by the next morning fresh white fluffy stuff had grown back over it - that's why I think it's bruising... It's real weird tho.. when I get my digital cam back on friday I'll be able to post a few pics..

Contams!! Toss it. The black color probably is spores from the little black heads. If you touch it with a white kleenex and it leaves black marks or any other color on the Kleenex it is contaminated. Better review you sterilization technique:(

From the way you describe it, it very well could be bruising. With the tiny whisps of mycellium coming off the cake, their bruising can be such a deep blue that it looks black, as the side of the cake will be a much lighter bluish/green. However, without seeing it firsthand, it is hard to tell. If you can, try to isolate the cake away from any other cakes you might have, and keep a close eye on it. Treat it normally, you will soon know if it was just bruising, or if it is indeed a contam. Good luck - I hope it is just bruising. -Ankh

Ankh is right. Seperate and wait. Usually contaminated cakes won't fruit well and they soon enough start going really bad i.e. lots of funky colors or one real ugly one:)
