How Well Does H202 Kill Contams?
    #360816 - 07/25/01 04:43 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

Does hydrogen peroxide kill all bacteria? i mean, i know i use it to clean my cuts and stuff... but are there any contams that it might not kill? and how concentrated can it be without killing mycelia? does it just not phase mycelia at all? or does it damage it a little, slow growth, anything of the like?

9 parts water to 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide will hold mycelia in suspended animation. No, it won't kill everything else. Too bad, huh? It would save us alot of headaches.

I've experimented with peroxide on normal rice/verm cakes.

I used quite a lot of 3% h2o2 to water to make a peroxide-smelling substrate, mixed that with a crumbled rice cake (once fruited) and spooned into jars. All four seem to be colonising now, zero smell, zero extra colour, I believe the first to be fully colonized in under two weeks.

What's exceptional, is I used no other sterilization. Just the h2o2, some of it added straight into the verm and some used from a spray bottle to just moist my gloves / the jars / mostly everything. No boiling, no pressure cooking, no rubbing alcohol, no critical parts at all.

Of course there's still ample time for all the cakes to contaminate, but after one week everything seems perfect and the mycelium seems to grow normally. I'll keep you updated.

Pretty amazing I'd say. H2O2 only kills bacteria and other baddies by the release of O2. So only things sensitive to O2 will be effected. Most contams have a very high tolerance to O2 so their spores can sit in dry open air and wait for the perfect growing conditions. Wait you will see contams most likely.

Huh? Who just said that? Wow man!

I agree, that is amazing. I have a jar of brown rice that is showing some green mold contam. I applied strait 3% (1ml) with a syringe to the infected area. anyone care to place a bet that it works?

H2O2 will only kill of cobweb as far as everything else you need to either throw in away or apply a salt/water paste to the area to keep it under control in a tray or tub until the flush is done then throw it away.

That would be the equivalent of blasting someone with a .38 special then wanting to feed them a multivitamin to make everything all better. :banghead:

noted, thanks. as of this posting the jar with green mold has been disposed of, luckily I have another fourteen (6qt grain and ten pints pf style) growing strong healthy ecuador and golden teacher mycelium with no visible contams. the contaminated jar was just standard grocery bought portobella. by the way nice to be apart of this truly amazing community, I am relatively new to the world of mycology and infact this is my first grow. everything is going great. damn I love this.
