look at how many possibilites of past lives there could be life expectancy throughout the ages and how many possible lives that you could have lived. so at least one could have been someone special and the rest lived really crappy lives. and they just don't have to be lives in this possibility that we are living now.

So far, I have found books by Alan Watts (a drunken wife beater according to Swami) and Ken Wilber (a drunken wife beater according to Ken himself) to be most enlightening.

I recomend 'The Wisdom of Insecurity' by Watts and 'No Boundary' by Wilber.
