The rise of commentators
    #3610787 - 01/11/05 02:07 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Is anybody else bothered by the increasing influence of commentators in the news world? Commentators and journalists differ. Journalists report the facts and attempt to keep all bias and opinion out of their reporting. A commentator talks about a true story, but then injects his or her own opinion into their presentation. It seems as if more and more Americans get their opinions from commentators and view these people AS journalists. For example, Fox News relies on commentators for a large chunk of its programming. Anybody have any opinion on this?

Commentators do seem to have an increasing role, but I believe it is due to the fact that Americans as a general rule are too lazy to form their own opinions. This is one of the many reasons I don't trust democracy.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniencies attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson

Yes, it is happening, because journalists and "commentators" or "talking heads" as some would call them are becoming personalities with which the public becomes fascinated.

It is not news, it's more like Jerry Springer. Fox news is worst of all.

They keep people from digesting facts with their friends and they merely air ideas, which probably aren't their own. Instead the agenda of the news broadcaster is spit out to distract people from true horrors occuring right now (guant. bay, abu ghraib).

Correlation is not causation!

Yeah it's kind of bizarre. Especially when they come with these prepackaged liberal/conservative bundle of opinions and such a powerful conceptual sense of identity. Crossfire comes to mind.

1. "After an hour I wasn't feeling anything so I decided to take another..."
2. "We were feeling pretty good so we decided to smoke a few bowls..."
3. "I had to be real quiet because my parents were asleep upstairs..."
