agree to disagree?
    #3609595 - 01/10/05 09:28 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

yesterday a buddy of mine and I were discussing the universe  and whether or not it was created or if the universe is eternal. now I knew from the get go that and answer wouldn't be reached...who would reach an answer on such a huge question? we got to a point to where he had a belief that god "created" everything.  using one of the only tools I have, that being logic, it didn't make sense to me.  so then he said

"well we will have to agree to disagree"

and I'm thinking to myself...why?

I have uttered this statement myself many times and I'm starting to see where it is a block.  does anyone else see this?

a good discussing get's cut off with this concept.

what use does agreeing to disagree have?  it's like, why even debate at all if a person is going to be so set in their ways.

to answer this I had to look back when I uttered this statement before and the reason why I said this is because deep inside me, there was an idea that my ego was identifying with, and I didn't want to go there.

thoughts?

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

If we multiply the number of our oposite beliefs, there is a better chance that one of them will turn out to be true when the time comes

well, i think when discussing things as the origin of the universe the only thing you really can do is agree to disagree.....unless you enjoy talking endlessly in circles...

Only people who are wrong and know it suggest agreeing to disagree. Well, maybe that's not true, but in the case of your friend, I suspect there was no further discussion in his mind. His mind was decided and he wasn't going to continue with a discussion where he had nothing to gain and everything to lose. Why would he? His stance isn't based on evidence so where could the discussion possibly go but against him?
