Local Cactus Vendors....?
    #3608792 - 01/10/05 06:28 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

So, does anyone have any tips or suggestions when looking for a botanical shop in my area and trying to find San Pedro or a similar cactus.  I've done some searching through the forums looking for online vendors and such, but I'm more interested in buy a rooted cactus to have for awhile (of course I will eat it in time).  Most of the vendors I have found do not sell rooted cacti, just cuttings and the like.  If anyone here lives in the PNW and knows of some shops, I'd greatly appreciate it.  Otherwise, if anyone has any experience in buying an active cactus from a vendor in the states, I'd love to hear anything you have to say.  I'm primarily concerned that walking into a shop and asking for a cactus, they may not be very helpful considering I'm only 18 and any experienced botanist would know exactly my intentions in asking "Hi, do you carry San Pedro cacti..."  Maybe I'm just being paranoid, anyway, I'll stop rambling, thanks for any help you can provide

I wanted to find local vendors in my area too.. The best advice I can give you is to use google... look at sponsered results as well as the normal results. I was looking for nurseries in the UK that would ship to me cheaply but I found a few a short(ish) car ride away from my house.. nothing really local but It's not like I live in a big city.

Apparently this is the best catci link page on the net (only what I read) http://www.cactus-mall.com/

Try asking for the cacti by it's latin name, say it's a present for your eccentric grandma who has a giant cactus garden. Either come up with a believable story or get it mailed to you (San Pedro aren't illegal in america are they?).

I don't believe so, however I believe they are if intended for human consumption... can anyone confirm this?

Nope, they are 100% legal. If you alter it though, then you could get in some legal hot water.

Yes, they're legal, but the mescaline inside them is not. So basically you can buy them legally as long as you don't plan on eating it. I bought mine online, but if you do find a good nursery make sure you know its scientific name and have a good story as Slite said.

Buying cuttings really isn't that bad though. I got a 6 inch cutting this time last year (cost me $9 plus shipping) and now its about 18 in. tall.

really...? Where can I find some info on planting and things like that when using a cutting, cause that sounds kind of interesting, I'd be down to do that over coming up with some crazy story and spending a bunch of money.
