Is Republican Democracy doomed?
    #3607826 - 01/10/05 03:14 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

By Republican I mean "Republic based"...not the political party.

It seems as if the two main examples of republican democracy(Rome and the U.S.A.) ended up being perverted from the original intent of the founders. The public's will, apathy, greed, shortsightedness, and selfishness lead to the support of leaders or policies that restricted their freedoms and subjugated their lives more and more to the state. Is Man so hopelessly flawed that he cannot maintain his freedom? Are all democracies doomed to failure? Can democracy be maintained indefinately? What is the fate of the U.S., or any other so-called democracy?

All things have a cycle. People often only realize what they had after they have lost it.

Maybe something better will emerge, but only after a shit-storm.

"Democracies will collapse when the people realize they can vote themselves endless entitlements from the public kitty." Or something like that.
