    #3607552 - 01/10/05 02:04 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

hey...was i really supposed to sterilize the vermiculite i roll with?
cause in some of the teks i read...no one mentioned that...and the fact that u don;t need to sterilize the water u dunk in made me think it was ok!
are these cakes doomed or what?

yeah, moisten (you'll get the feel for making it come out "field capacity", if dry, moisten with 10 % solution) put in microwave for 10 mins. or bake at 180 F for 35 min. I think is the bake.

Sterilize it next time. I like to throw in a quart jar full and just sprinkle that out on foil to roll in. Mist with h202/h20 mix to moisten. It may be a good idea to mist the stuff thats on there with the latter if you didn't sterilize before you rolled. Don't mist pins though.

I would have thought that sterilizing was all important. Then, a couple days ago I read that portabella's (i think) need some bacteria to initiate pinning. That got me wondering weather some bacteria would help cubes to pin.

anyone know?

Also, I dunk, but I never use sterilized water. Fully colonized samples are supposed to be able to resist contams. I would apply the same logic to rolling verm, which is supposed to be damn near sterile anyway, n'est pas?

I'd say contaminated (non-sterile) dunking water would find its way to the center of a cake where there's always a chance things haven't been fully colonized yet. As for non-sterile verm, it would only cling to the outside of the cake so it wouldn't penetrate deep into the cake like dunking water does.
