Doesn't sound much different than compulsory short hair when you join the military...which also isn't a democracy.

A former Russian I know says that back in the old Soviet Union the police would arrest males if their hair was too long and then forcibly give them a hair cut. Last time I saw him he told me to be a capitalist.

"A campaign exhorting men to get a proper short-back-and-sides has been aired by state-run Pyongyang television.
The series is entitled Let us trim our hair in accordance with Socialist lifestyle.
While the campaign has been carried out primarily on television, reports have appeared in North Korean press and radio, urging tidy hairstyles and proper attire.
It is the strongest media campaign against men's sloppy appearances mounted in the reclusive and impoverished Communist state in recent years."
hahaha.

except that in most countries people join the military voluntarily, fully understanding that by doing so they give up many freedoms, one of which is choice of hairstyle. it seems that in north korea there is no such freedom to give up. there is also a military purpose for short haircuts. it's cleaner and easier to keep that way in combat, doesn't get in the way, and promotes unit cohesion (conformity if you want).
when individual sovereignty becomes subordinate to the state and its plans, as it does when a state endeaveors to control and direct people's capacity for production, no freedoms are safe. legally establishing a mandatory haircut, for the good of the great plan, and requiring people to cut their hair "in accordance with Socialist lifestyle" is a fine example of collectivism extended to its logical conclusion. all individual activity is subordinate, not even to the collective, but to the armed men and the forced plan claimed to represent and benefit the collective.

It stressed the "negative effects" of long hair on "human intelligence development", noting that long hair "consumes a great deal of nutrition" and could thus rob the brain of energy.
Okay.. so hair grows faster if you don't cut it, what a nightmare, maybe it might snowball and before you know it you are Cousin It?
A friend of mine told me that when he took a holiday driving across America he was stopped in the Southern States a lot, for no apparent reason, other than to receive fashion advice from the local cops over his long hair.
That was the eighties though.

Doesn't take the military or an "evil empire" to make a hair style illegal. Here in the BVI it is illegal to have dreds and they are serious about enforcing the law. I have watched tourists get off the boat only to be arrested because of their hair before making it to the end of the dock. You can get a permit to allow dreds, but you have to get it from the dept of tourism, and they will only hand out the permits in person... which means you can grow the dreds after you get the permit if you are planning to visit.

Wow thats special Its not just hair the fashion police are after, in Ghana (and other places) its illegal to wear anything that makes you look military, so watch out if you wear combats. Edit: Quote from US State Dept. travel advice on Ghana. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1124.html CLOTHING PROHIBITIONS: Wearing any military apparel, such as camouflage jackets or trousers, or any clothing or items that may appear military in nature, is strictly prohibited.

Indeed, never let facts get in the way of propaganda "I don't advise a hair cut man. All hairdressers are in the employment of the government. Hair are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos and transmit them directly into the brain. This is the reason bald-headed men are uptight" - Danny
