i've been thinking about starting a tank with a reef but unfortunately the prices of inverts, rocks and fish are just too expensive here.

possibly one of these days...but i've been surfing the web for info on what would be hte right size tank, what sort of inverts would make a tank look good and compatible fish to have, etc.

Yeah, I was gonna set one up last year after getting my tax refund check. But that money was soon spent on other things that were needed more. Maybe later this year I will save up some cash to make a nano reef. Those things are just so badass.

I had a beautiful fresh-water setup that I sold when I bought my house (almost 4 years ago). I was the master of fresh-water.

Now I'd like to tackle salt-water. I've been contemplating it for some time. There is a local company that manufactures beautiful tanks ( see here ) but I've heard good and bad about acrylic tanks and I'm not sure what to do.

One of these days I'll probably get a wild hair up my ass and go drop a couple G to set up a beautiful system. But I need to do a lot more research first.

What about vivariums?

For dart frogs and such? or am I the only reptile-enthusiast here?

The thing with marine set ups is the time they take to become established with the correct bacteria before anything rare or expensive can be introduced, sometimes up to a year before all the nasty green weed vanishes, also they require a lot of light, so much so that i got busted once for the electricity bill as the DS thought i was growing large amounts of grass (12 hour cycle)Once up and running they require very little maintanence and are one of the best tripping toys you will ever find!

Yeah,it prolly is but it can grow long and smother everything if theres too much nitrates, which there usually is with a young tank.I would also recommend double powered undergravel filter, large powered external filter, powered protein skimmer and very few fish.

I had a 30 gallon reef tank for awhile. Very cool. Eventually the briopsis (a tenacious kind of algae that very few creatures like to eat) got out of control and I got sick of pulling it out all the time. So I gave away most of the live rock, fish, and corals. Now all I have is a mantis shrimp. He's my favorite. And he doesn't care about the light so I can keep it dark (except when I want to watch him) and I never have to mess with algae.

i have a saltwater tank and a freshwater. reef shit is very expensive and hard to take care of. i recommend just getting saltwater fish if you want alot of purdy colors. i have a red belly pirahna in the freshwater and a neon blue fish with spiny starfishes in the saltwater.

Thats the reason you dont have any weed, the less shit being produced the better as the system can cope with whats being produced, hence very few fish.Healthy living rock is part of the filter chain.I had a 40 gallon tank and never had to feed the fish, all i did was top up with fresh filtered water(salt does not evaporate)do a quarter salt water change every three months and clean the front of the glass, thats why glass beats acrylic. It can take a while to establish a bacteria balance and must be done slowly, ie add one fish or anenome once a month.Add one fish too many and you tip the boat allowing the green meany to gets its lunch.

Watch out for that Mantis shrimp, if its the one i think it is, it can break the glass (and your fingers)

I have a 180 gal with an 80 gal sump. 2 metal halides and 2 10K by 4 ft fluos. No filter just lots of rock and a skimmer. You have to add about $200 worth of snails and hermits and starfish scavengers every year. That's what keeps the algae down. Even in this size tank more than 12 or 20 inches of fish is a strain on a full reef set up. The nightmare is coming, though. We're moving in 5 months. That is going to be a total horror show.

Thats why I sold my freshwater setup when I bought my house.  The thought of moving it sucked.  And that was just a simple 70 gal freshwater system.  I can't imagine what you are gonna have to go through!

What due keep(are thinking of keeping) Over the years theres been Rainbow Boas,Boa Constrictors Water Dragons,Water Monitors,Tokay Geckos,Madagascan Green Day Geckos(their cool, like the Tokays, they can run up glass and across the roof, which is always fun if you need to catch one.The Tokays and Monitors can give you a serious bite if you dont grab em just right though. The bummer with Geckos and Frogs is, most call to each other during normal human sleeping hours, as does food if it escapes, and it will!(Crickets and locusts can kick up a helluva din, if the only thing awake is a dropping pin,You might want to keep that in mind if your keeping them in your room!!

Did a quick search on Mantis shrimps.

Certain kinds can hit almost as hard as a .22 cal bullet.
Supposed to be one of the quickest movements in the animal world.
Cool.

thats the other thing to keep in mind. moving saltwater tanks is extremely time consuming and hard. you dont want anything to die and you want to have the same balance as you had before. dont stress your fish.

Its can be easy,if you syphon and retain 3/4 of the water then take out the rocks(having taken out the fish/shrimps,etc, thats if you can find them, the crabs and anything else will look after themselves) Bag it up with some of the syphoned water. With the water that is left slowly syphon out all the shit in the substrate and disgard, with a gravel cleaner(a tube with a beer can sized end)Stick this in the substrate to remove as much white shit as possible,do this by regulating the flow with your thumb, letting the gravel fall back down. You should be able to move the tank with the gravel,if not bag it up,rebuild at the other end, pour the water back in slowly, add fish and Bobs your uncle.
