Question about old jars...
    #3605664 - 01/09/05 11:57 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Greetings all!
I am a newbie grower, who started growing some 'shrooms a while back. i went through all the proper sterilization procedures, and had very little problems with that, however i was forced to "forget" about my project some time ago due to a family emergency. Now i am back, and ready to pick up where i left off. i have about a dozen jars that have a nice coating of white fluff on top (i did not inoculate as well as i could have - next time i'll do better!), however that is as far as the growth got before i had to ignore my jars. My question is whether or not it is possible to pick up where i left off, or do i have to start over? In other words, will the Mycenae start growing again, now that i have begun to look after them, or will it just stay in it's current form forever? Thanks for your help!

Hmm, I have a friend in the same situation. I don't know the answer to that. How many jars are there? How long ago were they forgotten?
If it were me, I'd just start over. Clean the jars out well, sterilize them and do up some new jars. Why not?

Good luck either way.

heh, mainly 'cause i don't wanna buy more spores... just seems like an easy way to draw attention to myself, and being where i'm from, that's not a good idea

anyways, like i said, i have 12 jars.  they are all very clean (no contams) and all look very promising, just seem to have stopped at the mycenae stage.  (like i said, i'm new at this, so forgive me if i'm using the wrong words in this)  Everything is covered in a nice white fuzz, and in one of the jars (which i opened to check for moisture content - in hopes it didn't dry out too much) i noticed that the mycenea is saturated throughout the medium.  It would seem a shame to start over, since it looks so good now, but if i must, i must. :frown:

Sounds like the jars are still viable, if the myc is white & healthy.

Thanks for the response agar, do you know how i might be able to "kick them in gear"? i know certain species of fungus will go dormant if they are lacking in a specific ingredient (such as sunlight) and will activate once they obtain it. are 'shrooms the same? if so, do i just need to put them in some light for a while? or add something to the jars?

Are they PF jars? I have never done PF brf/verm jars, so I can't tell you. If you have sterile conditions, a G/B, or flow/hood.... you could "transfer" live healthy myc to a PC'ed wbs or rye jars.

Well, i do not have a hood, however i do have a bathroom that i have converted into a "clean room" just for such things.  It worked well last time, so i would imagine it would work well this time as well.
And yes, they are PC'd jars with vermaculite and rye flour.  (don't know all the abbreviations yet

If the others say they are good, then I'd agree. As long as there are no signs of contams. Again, good luck to you.

fully, no. i did not inoculate them perfectly (first time - learning quick!) but the top half of the jars is pretty well saturated with mycenae.

I'd just flip the jars once every couple of days. I ran into a problem where they stalled, but I think it was because of the vermiculite being too small and tape on the inoculation points. If after a while you dont see any more growth I'd prolly just cut the under colonized part out and use what you get from that part to get a print or something to seed another jar. GL

How OLD are the jars?

Do they stink?
If they stink they might have a bacterial contam.

Sounds like they might be ok...from the way you described them.

Can you post a picture of them?

Good luck!~

next time try better gas exchange methods, or dont fill the jars up as much with substrate.

I put a PF jar on the counter, intending to let it grow invitro. After more than a month, nothing was going on so I put it into the pmp. One day it went completely thick with pins. One huge mushie grew out, a couple of smaller ones, and tons of aborts. Total yield was 3 grams dry.

I'm here to tell you that aborts are more powerful. That 3 grams picked me up and washed me out to sea. "Sooo, you want psychedelic, hey kid? Here ya go." Good thing I was alone, as I would have been completely nonfunctional in a social situation. (Unless everyone else was laying there twitching too ;-)

Jim's got it ^^^
I had the same situation 2 weeks ago. If they are not contammed, they are good. They just need to breathe
