Confusion on incubator and teranium design
    #3605076 - 01/10/05 04:03 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hello,

I used (2) clear rubbermaid tubs (with a solid top cover) as my incubator chamber. One stacked on another separated by heated water.
Then I put my pf jars in there.
Are these types of tubs ok to use?

Next, I used the same type of container only one of the type of tubs for a teranium with perlite humidification. Is there too much light?

-Jar indications-
small primordia form at the tops of the jars right before the loose vermiculite layer. That would indicate that birthing is required. But once the cake is birthed and placed in the terranium, no further growth is oberserved.

Should I not use these tubs?
Thanx!

1.You want your incubator to be dark(no light can get in at all)

2.Are you fanning???(3-5 times a day?, and misting?)......and your fruiting chamber needs light from the top, so cut a hole in that solid top lid and hang a small fluorescent above that.(you can seal the hole with saran wrap and tape...simple

Ok at this stage in the game, with the incubation, the jars are almost done, should I put them in the dark containers?

And the ones that have small primordia forming, yet not fully colonized? what should I do with those?

Fruiting chamber
-cut a hole and put a small flourecent (maybe blacklight?) and seal it up. Fan every 1-2 days..right?

The incubator has to be completely dark inside? Does it hurt, then, to take the jars out in the light to check on them?

No, checking your jars is ok, but light will slow growth, if it doesnt cause early pinning.

Fan 3 - 5 times EVERYDAY.

Yes anything thats still growing should go back in the incubator, and I would put the ones that are pinning early in there to(if they arent finished growing)

You "could remove the uncolonized sections and fruit, but thats risky.

Is it okay to have a lid on top of the container with your jars? And do you need to fan this tub?

Sounds like the rubbermaid you're using as a terrarium doesnt have a lid. You'll need your birthing chamber to have a high relative humidity. That usually means being sealed. Some suggestions were using saran wrap.

You want lots of light in your birthing chamber. 12/12 hours cycle. So no, having all that light come in from the top shouldn't be too much, but you will need lots of humidity.
