Was it the cup I used?
    #3604504 - 01/09/05 04:55 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I forgot my coffee mug at home, so I made a cup of coffee into this little red plastic cup, and it was HIDEOUS. I didn't change my coffee, I didn't change the coffee maker, or the creamer. I just changed the cup and the sugar. And I would THINK that sugar is sugar.

Can a plastic cup ruin a cup of coffee? I don't understand what went wrong.

I'd say it's the plastic. Coffee is pretty hot and plastic melts at a low temp, so just the heating of the cup could definately alter the taste of the coffee. Even the cup getting hot and putting off an odor would be enough to change the taste.

So uh...am I going to be OK? You're saying I drank hot melted plastic so that worries me a little bit.

I wouldn't worry; you're alive now, aren't you? I'm not going to get into the complexities of plastic, but consider this. If the plastic was melting, then shouldn't the structural integrity of the cup be noticably damaged? You said you used a different cup, could this cup have remains of it's former contents? Could the process of washing it leave a soapy residue on it? Could you have been the victim of a practical joke? Has something similar to this happened before?

There are many possible explanations to this, and of all the people who could find the answer... you are the most qualified.

it was the cup.. Just like if you put hot coffee into one of those paper fast food cups that are lined with wax, it will melt the wax into the drink :puke:
lesson learned, carry on
