Cooked rice?
    #3603921 - 01/09/05 04:41 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hey everybody. My friend steam sterilized 4 1/2 pint jars last night with a standard verm/BRF filling. Well, he got a little caught up in the bathroom, the water evaporated off and I guess his towel was a little thin because the jars all cracked along the bottom. None of them actually broke, only cracked slightly. He doesn't want to use them so he thought, instead of making up all new jars, why not empty those jars, break up all the filling and pack it into new jars? Well, I'm wondering if the sticky rice goo that forms while steaming, if that gets broken up in the cake, then re-steamed, will that goo just gunk it all up and restrict mycelial growth? Just a thought before wasting the time. He'd appreciate any help/advice you can give. Thanks.

my guess is that it would be ok to use,, but if the jars only cracked and did not break lose and messs up the cake then u can still use those.. just strilze them with alcohol and lysol,,, and use some kind of tape to cover the cracks air tight!!! i suggest masking tape double layer it and tape the jars real good, they should incubate just fine,,

Thanks. But what if he already emptied and repacked the jars?  :smirk:

well just resterlize them, and it should be okay. might eliminate a small amount of nutes, but shouldn't be a problem.

The only thing you might have to think about is the lost material in those old jars. For instance there might be a significant amount of water remaining in the cracked jars.

Its worth a shot to try them in new jars, just make sure to sterilize them. And if doesn't work then oh well.

Nothing like re-sterylzed rice....Don't do it to much, if you got the water content wrong or get to much water in your jars from evaporation...Then you'll have goo later on when you incubate...=)

Thanks all but for the little time and effort it takes to make up four new 1/2 cake jars, I think he'll just remake them. Thanks.
