Sealing PF TEK jars
    #3603449 - 01/09/05 02:45 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

For a PF TEK technique, what is the best way to seal the jars to prevent contamination during colization? In one guide I've read, it suggests using a piece of rubber. Where can I get a piece of rubber shaped the right way, with the correct thickness?

i dont think you would want to fully seal your jar. if you did the vermiculite and sterilization right. that should pretty much take care of it for you. i let my jars sit for a while without a lid to breathe them and let excess moisture out. i havent had a single contaminent in all 5 of my current jars and they are about to be cased.

That tek was probably refering to the rubber side down. The lid has a rubber seal on the bottom side.

Do I even need a lid in the first place?

I'm confused. What does rubber side up mean? Can someone post a picture of what it's supposed to look like? Am I supposed to attach a piece of rubber to the lid?

All of the jars I've come accross haven't had rubber on them.

House builders use it, if you go to a building supply store, or maybe stop by a construction site, you could get some a what is called "housewrap"
Its like paper with fibers in it.

1/2 pint canning jars come with usually two piece lids the center piece has two sides in canning you want the rubber seal side down but in our case rubber side up is best allowing for slightly more gas exchange which is vital to healthy mycelium growth. You do not want moistture to evaporate as thats the whole reason behind proper moisture content in the first place. The jars build up gases through the myc metobolic activity and it needs to be able to be released so air tight seal is a BIG NO NO! Do yourself a big favor and just leave the tape off the holes after inoculating as it has no relevance but to help keep water out during PCing and can be forgotten like many here have done in the past. Foil works better all the way around at not only keeping water out during PCing but it's also an added layer of contam protection. Tip during PCing the foil can be wrapped tightly but after inoculating it can just be "snugged" allowing for gas exchange. GL

My problem is that I don't really know what sort of jar you're talking about. Is is the same as a standard jam jar?

That definitely helps. I've used the search engine to no avail; where's a good place to find canning jars in the UK?

I heard that there is no difference in whether or not the rubber side is down or face up. Also tin foil is better than tape and if using tape remove after sterilizing jars.
