a cool trick when using 1pt jars
    #3602586 - 01/09/05 08:26 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

If you can't find 1/2 pint jars and don't want the looong wait for a whole pint jar to colonise you can do the following:

Fill the bottom half with moist (saturated) vermiculite.
With this trick you have effectively created a 1/2 pint jar.
But wait, there's more... When you birth the cake you immediately have a double ended casing because some of the mycelium grows into the moist lower half of the jar.

Here are some pics to illustrate:

The 1st pic is of of a 95% colonised jar. You can see the mycelium growing into the verm already (This is the Cuba strain, whatever that is? got it with some other spores)

Tada... a nicely form double ended casing

Hope this is useful to other noobs like myself.

The bottom layer of verm gets sterilised with the rest PF tek style. All you are doing is adjusting the volume you work with while not messing the moisture content up too much. The reason I use wet verm is because when I first had the idea I used dry verm and it made my cakes too dry when PCing.

I guess I just find working with 1/2pt cakes easier than 1pt cakes.

Not a bad idea, interesting way to get a double end caseing without the extra step.

well the trick is to just get what ever you need for 1/2pints times it by 2 and mix that in a bowl or you can mix up what you need for 12 1/2 pints and use that for 6 pints

1 pts just colonise too long. Also, I believe that one gets more yield from 2 half pint cakes than a full 1 pint cake. Something to do with surface area or maybe how easily moisture can be absorbed. I don't have stats to back this up but I think I read a thread somewhere about it.

The idea of a built in casing has been on the net for a while.
I like the 1 pint idea cause it would be good for invitro. Dump the extra verm out and you have plenty of room for invitro fruits.
You will prolly have less stalling/flipping so thats another good thing.

That's b/c verm. sucks up moisture, took it right from ur top ended side and messed up your water content

I like the idea tho, but grains are for me

i just made sum over moist substrate and filled that half way. by the time the water evaporated off, it was correct water content. the thing sprouted mushies while i wasnt exzpecting it to, so i ended up getting 3 grams.

and it grew from sum KARO solution i grew which isolated this crazy fast strain. this thing colonized in a wbout a week in the mid 60s. thing was cold as hell to the touch. crazy cubensis.....

strain was spores 101 hawiian, and i left that thing chill at like 70 degree temps.

took about 3 weeks to finish.

im gonna write a tek on this son as i can get pics up.
