birthing
    #3602495 - 01/09/05 09:49 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all-
I have a couple questions about jars and birthing:
Most of my jars are 75%+ done colonizing.

1. If the jars were kept above 86 (that's where my thermometer stops) for a few days, will they continue to grow mycelium if kept at the right temp? Some look slightly bruised and/or yellowed.

2. I'm planning on rolling in verm after dunking. Should I sterilize the verm and if so what's the best method?

Any other tips or opinions are welcomed! Thanks- Ashleigh

What's up ER. To answer your questions:

1. While temps above 86F are not the best for mycelium growth, they will continue to colonize, just at a slower rate. Myc can survive up to around 106F. I don't know how you would bruise the myc while its still in the jar, unless you shake the shit out of it often, so that may be a contam you're looking at. Yellow is a safer, possibly myc piss, a byproduct of the colonization process. A pic would tell....

2. I've heard of people rolling in unsterilized verm with success, but personally, I don't take any chances. I'd bake the verm in the oven for about an hour before using it.

Hope this helped! Good luck with your grow, post a pic of those cakes if you can.

Thanks Porchmonkey-
It looks like my myc just got wet, so got a little blue, since there's condensation in the jars. Thanks for your feedback, though!

Post a pic if possible. My early jars often had very heavy water condensation inside the jars near the end of colonization. I used to mix my substrate way too moist but I never noticed any bruising. It's possible that you may be seeing a contam of some sort. If posting a pic so that we can identify it is not possible then I stress that you should take caution in birthing your cakes. Be sure not to stick your nose in there smelling around. If it is a contam it could make you sick in some instances. I'm more worried about you than the cakes here, y'know. I just wanted to let you know about the possible health risks so be careful. GL to ya and I've got my fingers crossed for ya that it's not a contam.

Thanks Beetlejuice-
I'll try to get some pics posted... about 6 of my 12 jars are fine, but the others all have yellow/blue tint to them.

The yellow could be myc piss.I have had a few cakes bruise before but I 've also had a blue contam both soild and dots.Don't smell if you think you have contam's.

when it comes to steralization you can never be to sure. Take the extra hour and steralize it. Some may suceed without but is it worth losing 12 cakes to laziness? Hell no, take your time do it right the first time, you'll be much happier.
