    #360162 - 07/24/01 06:40 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

Is it possible to use Baking Soda as a replacement for hydrated lime when mixing 50/50+?

approximately how much would one have to use?

Lime is an Acid.....use to raise acidity
Baking Soda is a Base used to lower acidity, you can use this if soil is too acidic.

Papa_bear, you got some things mixed up.

First, peat is acidic, it has a pH from 3-4.

You want to raise its pH, make it neutral=7.

Hydrated lime is a base, it will give you a pH of 13 in a concentrated watery solution.

Ground limestone is also a base, but will give you a pH of 8 even if added in excess.

Ground limestone(aka calcium carbonate aka chalk) is what the mushroom industry uses, NOT hydrated limestone.

Now baking soda is also a base, like you said, and it is used to lower acidity = to raise the pH.

So if you have means of measuring pH please do a test and tell us how much baking soda has to be added to certain amount of peat to raise its pH to 7.

So if its a base, why do you spray it on cobweb mold?
Wouldnt this effect the acidity of your casing? and leave it open to even more contams?

Yes, it makes it more basic, that?s why it helps against cobweb mold to some extent.
