honest question...
    #3601069 - 01/09/05 01:07 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Do not take this the wrong way, I just honestly want to know this.

Since there are a few older people here, who lived their prime in a culture developed by them, this is not directed towards everyone.

But the majority of posters here are young, hippiesqe, dead-head worshippers who are as close to wanna-be hippies of the 60-70's as you can get.

My question is WHY? Why steal the culture of a time period before you and adopt it as your own? Why not create your own culture, and be your own person? What are you going to tell your kids?

"Well son, I was a hippie when I was growing up"
"but dad you grew up in the 90's"

Come on now.

I'm 28, and I don't feel like I've "stolen" anyone's culture. This was passed down to me. It's my heritage. I think this "culture" has just survived throughout the generations.

Just be glad there are still "hippies"....they keep the earth clean.

That is a presumptuous statement, at best. The Grateful Dead toured in the 90's and so did alot of 'hippie' bands. I am not 'stealing' any culture, but I am a hippie, let there be no doubt. Just because you don't adopt the beleifs and opinions of those that you label, don't assume that we are just wanna-be's. Labels are for those who lack true understanding.

We all know the true reason for the hippie culture stemmed from the need to smoke pot, listen to jam-bands, and wear a hemp dress.

The hippies failed at their "ideology". You people are just wearing their old clothes. It is sad really.

Why do you think the hippie culture had to die when the 60's came to an end? The 60's was a very important time in history. It wasn't too long after WWII, a monumental occurence that would have greatly altered my perception of the world had I lived through it, and yet the growing mentality was based on home ownership and having a nice car. Not that there's anything wrong with that but the youth of that era began to see that there is more than meets the eye and that to question our values and way of life is more important than questioning how much we're gonna get back on our tax return. So in really general terms I see the hippie lifestyle as one that disagrees with the status quo. These "hippies" come in all shapes and sizes. You seem to be dwelling on the stereotypical view of the hippie, a product of Time magazine or something of the sort. Yes some of us hippies are still into the cultural phenomenenon that spawned the movement such as the Grateful Dead and the idolization of people such as Timothy Leary, John Lennon or Jerry Garcia. It's not stealing a culture of the past, it's acknowledging history and at the same time it's looking forward and seeing how this alternative lifestyle/way of thinking/being can find its place in today and in the future.

You're kinda hurting my feelings, now....  Don't be such a hater.

I think the "hippies" of the 60's are a whole lot kinder & nicer than the "grundge" movement of the 90's.  I mean, blech!

I only wear old hippie clothes on the weekends.  The rest of the time I wear business suits.  But, if I could, I would wear hippie clothes all the time because I would trade style for comfort.  There's nothing wrong with hippies or people that dress like them or listen to "old" hippie music.

There are people still walking around sporting mullets they've had since the 80's.  Are they culture-theives, too?  So, what is your idea of what is currently "in" or individual to the generation of the Y2K?

Yeah, people who think the movement died are blind or stupid....it's just underground. It was never meant to be a phase or a fad....it's a continuing movement, a counter-culture. We're not wannabes, we're the next generation of hippies. It's a way of thinking and living, not a time period. We have the same ideals, because those ideals are good, they are a way to live in harmony with all our brothers and sister, and in harmony with the planet. Ask some older heads, the ones that were around in the 60s (not the "reformed", I mean people still involved in this scene), and they'll tell you the same thing. They'll say it's a good thing that young people are getting into the scene, and keeping it going. Oh, one more thing....the movement was a result of LSD, not "the need to smoke pot, listen to jam-bands, and wear a hemp dress.". Peace and good vibes to ya!  :sun: :flowerchild:

Thanks, Looner.

I don't know about that all natural stuff, though.  I gotta shave.

Of all the people I've met in my life, hippies are always the nicest people.  They're so laid back and kind.

And what's so wrong with listening to jam bands, smoking weed and wearing a hemp dress?  Sounds like my kind of Saturday night!
