As long as the charcoal filter lasts longer than one bottle it could be worth it. If not, then the price for the new filter could just be spent on the good vodka.

he said 40 gallons per filter. since he filters 4 times, he gets 10 gallons finished product per filter. he says its way worth it price-wise and i have to agree that is tastes as good as belvedere (SP?).

Filter can filter 40 gallons. Filter the voddy 4x and each filter will do up 10 gallons. But you start with 10 gallons. It's how much volume passes through the filter.

This definitely works, and should be tried by all. Not just vodka either...had great success with whiskey too.

How exactly does this work, tho? Do you screw the liquor bottle into the Brita like the liquor was the water faucet?

OH! THAT works? I was thinking he meant something like a Pur screw-on faucet filter. So you've used the pitcher style for filtering liquor? Filter, pour, filter that, etc.?

It works, to some extent, with cheaper vodkas. Takes away some of the "ugh-shudder" taste.

Not familiar with it, but I'm assuming it's low end stuff from that response?
The thing is, vodka doesn't have a lot in it besides alcohol to give it flavor, being alcohol made from potato starch. Whiskey, on the other hand, gets a large percent of its color and flavor from the cask it is stored in, which can vary from wine, to sherry, to other bourbons. Filtering that would remove a large part of what gives it flavor.
I suppose if it's horrible "well" stock, filtering it can't hurt.. but it might just leave you with more low grade alcohol and _less_ flavor to mask it.

Alcohol is a waste product of yeast when it consumes simple sugars. You can ferment a table sugar and water mixture and get alcohol.
Most vodkas and whiskeys are made from the cheapest grains, Wheat, Corn, and Rye. Bourbon needing at least 51% corn in the grain bill.
As for potato vodka, it is frowned upon by the Russians, so Potato Vodka isn't produced as much as regular vodka. The only two that I can think of right now is Chopin and Teton Glacier. If you look on the label of regular vodka, most of the time it will say it is distilled neutral grain spirit.
As for whiskey, Jack Daniels does something called Charcoal Mellowing. From their website: "We filter freshly distilled whiskey through our own special charcoal made in our rickyard. The 140-proof whiskey slowly seeps through 10 feet of firmly packed, ground charcoal in huge old mellowing tanks. This removes the unpleasant oils that are always present in any grain alcohol."
They do the filtering before they put the whiskey into charred oak barrels, so running it through a brita filter(which has charcoal) could take away some of the flavor but I don't know.
