I know alot folks here use the fishtank heaters, but I like my heating mat. It's original purpos is for rooting cuttings (clones). So temps stay from 82-86....perfect. Why waste another tub

I am just starting out, but I like using a heating pad for my incubator. But the only reason I am doing this is because I didn't want to go out and buy a fish tank heater and i also had a heating pad in the closet that no one ever uses.

Not all heating mats are the same. Others have been know to use a water bed heating mat, wires & control out of an electric blanket. Just depends on WHAT you are heating. Here is what the guts out of an electrric blanket looks like. they can be had @ thrift stores for around $5.

I use tub-in-tub for everything, only need two aquarium heaters for entire setup (incubating and fruiting chambers).
Switched to this after too much uneven heating from heating pads.

I have 2 17 gallon PMPs, they are heated by a small heating pad, half underneath one, half underneath the other. It works well enough for me, and the pad was only $7.99 on sale at Longs.

I used to run a hydroponic store a few years ago so my mat was free of charge. I forget who makes it....I can simply look at it if you'd like? You can get cheaper ones that are used for snakes, lizards, ect. However these I've found to be useless for our purpose. They can get pretty hot, and heat is not all that well distributed in the pad. Most of your rooting mats will be work just fine, as they need to be at a certain temp. in order to have a 100% or close chance to root your cuttings, which by the way is in the general range of 82-86...what luck Just for the sake of caution though, I keep a cloth towel on top of the mat, and my temps. always stay in the range of 83- 85f. When the central heat in the house kicks on it might top out at a whopping 86f. However don't dismiss the uses of fishtank heaters, as I said before...alot of folks have good results using them. It's just not my style. I don't feel comfortable with the water being around.

if you want to add thermostat capability to your incubation setup consider a reptitemp. Repti Temp 500R Remote Sensor Thermostat Features include a 6 ft. remote sensor probe, dual port plug receptacle to control multiple heating devices (try using Zoo Med?s Ceramic Heat Emitter and the Reptitherm Under Tank Heater!) Safety cover prevents accidental ?bumping? of the temperature dial! Includes mounting hardware and extra adhesive pads. Can be used in conjunction with a timer for day/night cycle simulation. Range is from 70? to 110?F (21? TO 43?C.) It literaly pins the temp down to your desired level. I have always gotten a steady temp out of it with maybe a 1 degree variation. Works like a charm. , mycomancer

Right now my 500r is keeping my snake happy so i'm gonna grab another one from agar's link. It was probably the best thing i ever did for my incubation setup.
