Just knowing that we (Americans{United States of}) are already ahead of them (Europe) on the whole "United" concept makes me grin, but then again the euro is strong. I believe that Americans have always been more positive, upbeat, and optimistic than Europeans. That is why we are where we are today as a country.

First of all, the article should be titled "Americans more Positive, Upbeat, and Optimistic than Europeans about their economic status". Economic status and quality of life are positively correlated, but not identical. A fact that is often overlooked in countries suffering from the neoliberalism disease.
Second, the questionaire asked about "improvement", a relative value, not an absolute one. A person that moved out from a worse slum to a slightly better slum could also say that his situation had improved (just as an overexeggarated example).

I don't think that being "united" is a value in itself. Being united can also mean oppression, loss of transparency, loss of influence of the individual on the whole. Too many people in Europe want the EU to be something like a superstate (resembling the USA), but I do not think that they really know why they want something like this and where the potential pitfalls are. History is full of "empires", and all of them fell at one time or another. I'm not really sure what drives people (or the abstract construct of nations) to drift in this direction again and again. I, personally, think that the EU will shatter in the next hundred years. It is sad, but that is my prognosis. I am just left to wonder if this will be a tragic or a necessary and positive event...

What is the link (if any) between socialism and happiness? What links real (objective) improvement and subjective improvement? Same answer.

I think polls aren't hard science, as they only measure opinions. I also think the U.S. will always do better economically because its government doesn't give a shyte about its subjects.
