Kitty liter? WTF?

I was talking to an "old timer" shroomer..........He is 48....HE said they use to grow their shrooms during college in kitty litter? WTF? Was this due to a lack of vermiculum or perlite? Looks like kitty litter would be hard to clean..?.....He also used cow dung that was already colonized with p cubensis.........Maybe the kitty litter helped neutrilized the smell of the dung? He said the smell was horrible.......

I used wet cat litter in place of perlite a few years ago the kit I ordered said that is what I should use for humidity control worked good but like you said cleaning is a bitch.imo perlite is much better.
BTW this is my first post here I'm a mycotopia drifter

if you think about it, kitty litter would only be good for situations where the humididty was constantly too hihg, after all, the purpose of kitty litter is to absorb moisture/odor, acting like a dessicant.
i would think that this would be detrimental in most situations...
correct me if i'm wrong

It probably would absorb moisture but why would you want to bring the humidity down when you need humidity to be pretty high (upper 90s for cakes 80s for casings) cat litter could be used wet in place of perite.
