A Great Casing question

After reading abou this in my portobella kit i was wondering if it would work with other strains,
Casing is used as a covering to hold water and protect the mushroom mycelium growing in the compost. Scratch the entire surface of the compost 1/2" deep. You can use a nail or fork to do this. Next open the bag of dry casing, and into the casing bag add 1/2 cup of the scratched loose compost to grow large mushrooms or 1 cup of loose compost to grow smaller average size mushrooms and 5 cups (8 oz. cups) of room temperature tap water. Mix the water, 1/2 or 1 cup of loose compost and casing together, until you have an even very wet mixture. Let the casing sit in its? own bag for 15 minutes to absorb most of the water before applying it to the compost. (A cup of water is 8 fluid ounces.)

Casing material should be nutrient free. I don't grasp adding compost substrate to it.

I see it rather confusing, though it could see how it would work. If compost is a nutritive material used for a substrate usually, why put it in the casing layer, which is supposed to be non-nutritive and only act as a water retention source. So, basically, just use compost for a substrate if your looking to up the yield, but adding it to the casing would probably produce results.

It is tough not to focus on your avatar long enough to actually read the post!
I have never heard of such a practice. Only reasonable explanation as I see it is by mixing in some of the colonized sub. with the casing, it may help the mend go a little faster.
The ones that wrote that have way more experience than I, so I know that there is a viable explanation for it... I am not sure what the end result would be if this was done with cubies.
...did I mention how much I like your avatar???

this would be adding fully colonized substrate

portobello mushrooms require some bacteria to initiate pinning, sterilizing or the pastuerizing the casing will kill that bacteria and no pinning will occur

well the question isnt about sterlizing casing. its about mixing fully colonized substrate into the casing to help with yeilds

Wait, colonized compost? Now im really unsure about the benefits of this procedure, as you would be scraping the casing off an already colonized layer, and then re-casing it. That just seems strange...

Well...you can't do this with manure and straw....Nutes=Contams....After a certain point there's more nutes helping bacteria out than ur mushies...
Casing layers also somewhat help with keeping out contams to an extent....Your idea has been tried and the results arent anything spectular, and usually wind up contaming...But Good luck on trying so, i do believe that exp. is best gained by trying, so good luck...
