Lighting issues
    #3597960 - 01/08/05 12:52 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Is it bad to rest a light directly on the plexi-glass top of my terrarium? One terarrium has a foot and a 1/2 long closet florecent light on top of it, and the other has a circle desk lamp with standard light bulb resting on the glass. Is this too hot? Will it melt the plexiglass?

The flourescent light won't hurt the plexiglass, but I wouldn't let an incadescant bulb rest on there that's for sure.

Be sure to watch your temps when lighting as well, if the lights are as close as you described they can spike the chamber temps up several degrees.

The standard light bulb (incandescent) will get way hot, but I doubt that it will melt plexiglass. Still, I would advise against resting the buld directly on the surface.

Try to elevate the light source if lighting from above. Take some shot glasses, small bowls, 1/2 pint jars, whatever and place them on top of the terrarium. Then take your flourescent and lay it across them, forming a sort of light bridge!

With either method, the internal temp of the terrarium will go up a bit.

for sure lift them up... i've found that if your light is higher, shadowy areas disappear more.

For an incandessant light, you should have about 1 foot clearance all around the bulb. The floressent light heat won't hurt the glass, but it will kill the bulb and transformer. Elevate the floressent bulb about one pen width off the surface. That is the problem with fish-tanks, they didn't design them with proper circulation, only enough circulation to keep them running. You will double your bulb life, and lower your electric bill by letting it cool more this way. The hotter it gets, the more electricity it takes to keep it running. Same with heaters, the quicker you cool them down, the more money you will save. That is why convection heaters die and waste money, you NEED air movement to reduce electrical resistance.

when you shut a heater off, it cools down, turn it on and it heats up, if its off
is cannot waste electrical power because it's not consuming it.

All heaters are convection type heaters, a conduction heater would require you
to have contact with it.
