HIGH MOUNTAIN COMPOST do you think you could inoculate a 10 pound bag and have it colonize?....grow out of the bag or maybe case it...

You could spawn some Pf jars to it.. Using spores will be a waste of time.

i think he means to inoculate with a MYCELIUM syringe.....i dont have glove box or sterile tools; would innoculating a 5-10 pound bag of substrate with a full 12cc spore syringe not be enough to inoculate&colonize?

He means you should make some pf style jars, let them colonize, then spawn them to the compost.

Compost is a casing material, you need colonized spawn (substrate} to make a casing. I would suggest you do a lot more reading.

Compost, generally, is not a casing material. It is a highly nutritious mix, and as we all know, you do not want a nutritious casing layer.
Also, here is a quote from a High Mountain Compost page...
"It has been specifically formulated for mushroom growth, so it is by far the most nutrient rich substrate available."

So, I suggest you do more reading.

Thanks daimyo for correcting my mistake, I've just always used brf, wbs, rye etc.etc. to create spawn jars. Never used compost jars or bags. I have mixed compost for casing layers and had good results, therefore I've always considered it a casing material. Goes to show you learn something new every day.

i know i read that...im not trying to use the compost as a casing layer i would probly use some verm.---i just wanted to know if i could inoculate 5-10n pounds of substrate and have it colonize

I guess you will have to be the first to try it and report. I wish you luck, because I am interested, as well. It certainly would simplify things!

No...you can't inoculate compost with a spore syringe or print.

You will have to spawn(mix) some already colonized mycelium into the compost.

After the compost is fully colonized...you would case it.

----

Compost is a bulk substrate...btw

What is considered a bulk substrate?

What spawn to substrate ratio should I use when inoculating bulk substrates?

Good luck!~
