Police uncover $15m amphetamine lab January 7, 2005
AN illegal drug lab used to manufacture amphetamines worth about $15 million has been uncovered in Sydney's north-west.
It was one of two drug laboratories police discovered at Lower Portland, on the Hawkesbury River, while executing a search warrant earlier this week.
A small lab was found in a granny flat on the Ski Lodge Road property, and a second larger lab was then found in a room of a house on an adjoining property.
More than 500kg of toxic waste was discovered in the labs, police said.
The first lab was used to extract a key ingredient of methylamphetamine from cough and cold tablets, while the second was used to convert the drug.
The Chemical Operations Co-ordinator, Detective Inspector Paul Willingham, said one lab contained enough equipment, precursors and solvents to "cook up" methylamphetamine with an estimated street value of $15 million.
