wet spot?

I birthed a fully colonized cake yesterday, and today when i opened the fruiting chamber to air it out, it smelled really nasty. The cake looks fine. Although, while it was colonizing water did collect at the bottom of the jar, and the mycelium grew in a funny way--sorta suspended from the glass inside of the jar and the cake. I loosened the jar lid, and the water disappeared, but the mycelium remained in this position. It wasn't discolored though. It was white.
anyway, the smell was undoubtedly like rotting apples, and judging from what other people say in this forum, that is attributable to wet spot. But i want to know if it was contaminated before or after birthing, because when i birthed the actual cake it smelled just like fresh mushrooms.

water droplets are fine. Have you cased in verm? If so, and wetspot is present, you can scrape the cake and recase.

I have the same problem. I innoced on the 10th and checked them today to notice a distinct sour smell, most definitely wetspot, but not a single jar shows signs of the contam. Any ideas?

wetspot os not simply wet sopts in the jar, it is a contam that starts invisible with a foul smell then makes the grain appear VERY wet over time, a good rule of thumb with grain is if it smells, its gone

They don't really smell foul or anything, they smell like they did right after I sterilized the jars (kinda weird smelling) except they do have the mushroom smell to them...but the weird smell is like a warm earthy smell..
