quick sterilization Q
    #3590067 - 01/06/05 07:53 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I've got a ton of grain to sterilize and it'd take days to do it with my little 6qt PC so I want to do most of them with a big pot I have. How long would I have to boil them to get the same effect as PC ing?

I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen without a PC. Boiling, and Pcooking are two totally different animals. From what I understand, by boiling them for any length of time all your going to achieve is super saturating the grain, not sterilize.
But don't take my word for it. I'm sure somebody else can give you a definite answer.

as far as I know it wont work

besides a long boil will explode the grains cause they get "over saturated" with water so becoming useless for your cultivation

without PC stick to PF jars
you can spawn them to bulk or case them, with nice results.

so they say

good luck!

edit: try a small experiment, soak some WBS for 20 hours, simmer 20 minutes, fill a PF jar (half pint) with wbs and 0,7 inch of verm on top.

Cook it as you would with PF jars without PC. Then inoc PF style. When fully colonized without contams you might have a workaround.

But if one is working with half pints anyway you can just as welll use pf cakes with BRF.

I hate to keep you up but the grains are in jars with loose lids and foil over the top. I believe i used to do this with PF jars before the PC. So unless I really turn the heat up and burn the grain dry all should be fine. The grain started out a little wet anyways!
Good night.

We will see in a few weeks if its contamfree! I doubt that if you use pints or larger. Grains in Quarts must be PC-d 60-90 minutes. Your method requires at least 2 hours then?

But ofcourse there is a chance you will be fine, which I hope!

for PF/Brf jars a PC is not necessary, though recommended. My cakes (bout 15 so far) did not contam due to bad sterilisation.
A few contammed later due to other factors, so I like to believe...

grains are superior to PF because you can get better flushes later on in life with them... and i find it easier to break up rye for casings as opposed to a PF cake.

A cake-advantage: it is easier to rehydrate (between flushes) since there is a lot of verm in it.

Talkin 2 me ignostic?

Its more the (high) amount of grain which makes it harder for the heat to penetrate it with high enough temperature.

I bet that 1 quart brf jars would be harder to sterilise too with ordinary boiling. But since the BR is grinded to BRF there are no "tough kernels" left making it easier to heat up.

Small amounts of grain in small jars could maybe become sterile by boiling. Many maybes etc, like I said, take it to the test!

Good luck! :thumbup
