Alaskas Denali...
    #3588879 - 01/06/05 02:26 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Hey as you may have read, Im headed out to Denali this summer for a full month of backpacking. My friends and I are starting in mid-July and are stoked as hell about the trip. Anyone ever been there before?

Im lookin for advice on gear, places to see, tips on technique ( including larger river crossings, traversing glaciers), also food selections to save on pack weight (we will be doing some resupply points as a months worth of food would be nearly impossible to lug around. Give me info people...

boy this sure would be a nice thread in an outdoors forum HINT! HINT!

Sorry I can't offer any advice, but if I am able, I will be in AK next summer too.

I'm in negotiations with two different friends about two different summer adventures.

one of them involves a 2+ week canoe trip into the forest, with minimal supplies.
the other involves me, spray paint, and a buddy riding the rails all over canada.

I'm leaning toward the latter or the two.

Bug netting and 101% DEET. Black flys thick as fog.

Just received my Osprey Crescent 110 backpack. It's a big pack, and you'll need one. I got it 25% off for 300 bucks at northernmountain.com. I also picked up a pair of Chaco Beckwith hiking boots for $199 from Zappos.com (regularly $239). I just received them last night and they are fucking awesome.

No we arent really experienced in mountainearing yet. We plan on working on our skills while we're out there, but no plans for North Americas highest peak. Im trying to focus on wildlife in the tundra areas and of course doing some glacier hiking. We will do a portion of the mountain, but nothing too crazy this time. After this trip we will probably start working on mountainearing

A word of advice: Climbing/Mountaineering is more addictive than opiates, and can be more expensive, too.
A good book to read is Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills. You can check the contents of the book here
