Mushrooms found out of season in Waitakere NZ
    #3587492 - 01/06/05 04:27 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

West Auckland, New Zealand.

I found these in my garden. Mushrooms usually grow here in autumn (mar-aug) But its summer now, although it has been an unusually wet summer, and cold, almost wintry conditions. They were growing in the lawn, not on dung, but there has been a fair bit of horse poo put on the garden, i.e. round the fruit trees. Could they be
PSILOCYBE SEMILANCEATA?

CAPS:

Cap width : 4-17mm

Biggest was 17mm across, 12mm high.

Campanulate, spreading when bigger.

Slightly Umbonate(d) on the biggest one

Quite dry to touch (it had just been raining, but dried off quickly)

Smooth

Colour: Varying

Medium choc brown on smallest ones. More uniform colour than the big one

Medium sized (7-14 mm) light choc in centre, then caramel rest of shroom

On the big ones: Light caramel ring on the outer rim, then a choc ring, then back to caramel in centre. Another was pretty much uniform caramel all over.

They all went darker, almost black as dried out (in sun)

But dried out indoors, they stayed pretty much the same colour...they just shrivvelled up a bit

GILLS:

Free, average spacing.

Colour: Dark chocolate in younger ones, and slightly lighter in older specimens.

Tiny (1mm ) bugs inside gills. Little grey things that jumped.

STALK:

Central

56mm length on the big one. 3mm wide where joining cap.

Even taper

Hollow

Cap fragile, stem less so . Some (caps) broke a bit as I picked them.

I?m not sure how to make a spore print, and I don?t have a microscope. If there isn?t enough info on this post?sorry, it?s the best I could do. I?m just hoping some kiwis will see this and check if they are ?gold tops?.

Cheers

It appears that you have some specimens of Panaeolina foenisecii, or another Panaeolus species. The darker ones could be different species. It's hard to tell.

To take a spore print just remove the stem and place the cap on a piece of paper, gill side down. Cover them with a cup and wait a few hours to a day. The mushroom has to be moist, so add a drop of water if needed. It is important that you spore print all of your finds.

I second eris on these, the two-tone ones are most certainly Panaeolina foenisecii. The other all brown ones are most likely a different species of Panaeolina becuase as you can see they are grouped, where as even though the P. foenisecii's are sort of together, they do not necessarily group together.

Put the caps down on a piece of white paper and put a cup over it till a print shows up (up to 12 to 24 hrs.)
Prints are absolutely necessary.
