ok...i need to ask some questions here...
    #3585987 - 01/05/05 10:15 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

ok i'm really sorry about this but, my syringes came today i must of read over this site a billion times, but i still have questions..first of all I was originally planing on using the PF-Tek cake method with brown rice flour - vermiculite - water...but then i came across a bit of a problem 1.I was told by at least 5 nursieries and 5 home depot's that they do not have vermiculite in the north eastern region, all they have is perlite, 2. all the organic/non-organic stores do not carry brown rice flour... so i was about to give up on this method..then i figured..maybe i could use the grain method..so i did alot of reading on that...and i'm still not getting the casing thing..because i'm a damn newbie at this...so finally my questions are...
1. can you replace BRF with whole wheat flour? wheat flour? with suitable results, any experiences?
2. if you replace vermiculite with perlite along with replacing BRF, would i get any results?
3. could someone point me in a different direction, maybe a real easy newbie grain method?
- thanx you for listening and sorry for the length of this ....respect

Hey saz3,

The PF tek is pretty solid and it's really hard to match the results given the simplicity of the materials, i.e. BRF, vermiculite. In my opinion you won't be succesful if you replace those items you mentioned, especially with those ingredients.

Have you looked into wild bird seed? It's very easy to prepare also, and is a great step in the "grains" direction. I prefer 1 pint jars of wild bird seed. The only issue you'll have here is a verm layer at the top, since you don't have access to it. So you'll have to track down some Tyvek or Polyfil, and the former can be taken care of with a visit to the post office.

Good luck,

HD

Hey will. DE huh....Right down the road from me
Well perlite in place of verm. in the PF-tek, you don't want to do...thats a no-no. As a matter of fact...(or should I say opinion), you don't want to use perlite at all, in any substrate. think of verm. as a spoung, and perlite as a bowl of water just laying around...hope that clears it up :crazy2:
Brown rice flower is easy to come by no matter what part of the country your from. you can use good ol Uncle bens long grain brown rice....grind it down to flour...no big deal really.
Verm. can be alittle difficult to get sometimes when it out of season. However I just picked up a bag 2 days ago at my local garden and feed store.
as for grain I can't tell ya, i'm just stepping into that myself using a millet based seed.
Good Luck to ya...folks here are always looking to help a fellow out

There's plenty of places you can order vermiculate, BRF, and just about anything you need online. Just wondering why no one has suggested this yet. It's by far the easiest option. You'll pay a little more for shipping but it's definately something to consider.

i've never understood that either... from what i gathered, the most important diff. for us is that perlite holds MORE water than verm. and releases more quickly, which is why it's used for RF instead of verm... i don't know why, if they're both sterilized well, perlite can't be used interchangably w/ verm... anyone want to enlighten me please??  :thanx:
