How important is it to use spring or filtered water over tap water?

It depends on the quality of water in your area. I use tap water for everything but you may not be able to where you live. You can have your water tested or buy a test kit and do it yourself if you have concerns about it. It's probably recommended by most to use distilled water but I've used it and haven't seen any noticable difference between that and tap water.

I've always used tap water for my mycological projects - no problems.

If spending a couple of bucks for bottled water will boost your confidence then go for it.

where i am the tap water doesn't work, because we sit on a limestone aquifer... if you have hard water, particularly water with high levels of magnesium, you'd be much better off using spring water.

I have well water and we have to add softener to it so I always use bottled water. I dont know what kind of crap is in that stuff. I personally try to drink it as little as possible and I put all sorts of chemicals in my body so I definatly dont want to use it for my mush. You probably have better tap water though and it shouldn't really be a problem.
