Liberty Cap Hunting
    #3583937 - 01/05/05 12:21 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I'm in Southern New York, by the border of CT and NJ. My friend wanted to go hunting for Caps, insiting it's not THAT late to take a look. I figured they'd all be dead upstate because of snow. Driving isn't really an issue, but do you think they're all dead anywhere within like a 4-5 hour drive, and if not, where'd be a nice place to head to?

May be a stupid question, but I don't want to waste 5 hours in a car when we don't need to :o

I certainly would not drive 5 hours to go mushroom hunting in New York in January. I think Liberty caps are rare there anyways. If I had a known spot and there had been really nice weather lately, then maybe I would drive an hour just to see. The dead of winter is not however the time to go searching out new patches.

Their season in upper state new York is over a month ago or so. They do grow also in Nova Scotia, P.E. Island and Newfoundland and in Quebec. No one has found them in Ontario, but Redbone found them and reported them int he literature in Upper New york. Thay are a fall mushroom until the freeze or frost.

As Shroomydan said. that would be a wasted drive north.

I live in Washington- and I was wondering if I would still have a chance to find some libs. Or for this question, would I still have a chance to find any psilocybe mushrooms at all?

maybe if you look really hard you'll turn up some late season cyans , I saw some a couple days ago, and a few stuntzii as well...

it's fucking cold though dude, I doubt much is up anywhere.  if you don't know of some reliable spots to pick already, I wouldn't bother going out looking for shrooms.

I also saw some cyans and stuntzii;s in a patch. stems were froze in the morning. IT is close to snow. very rare to find any now. Season for cyans is over. Maybe one or two pinner size ones but that is it for the yuear.

Blue ringers can pop up in the early spring months and Panaeolus subbalteatus can appear in soil with mulch here in the pnw, although not often enough or enough to trip off of.
