PCI Express?
    #3581396 - 01/04/05 08:04 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I am looking into getting a new video card, the Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT to be exact and I keep reading about its PCI express capabilities. So is this PCI technology only availible on certain motherboards or what? Thanks.

Certain motherboards are PCIe enabled. Read this for more information...

That is a great card. It easily overclocks to faster than the 6800 ultra.

Well my motherboard doesn't support PCI express, so would the AGP version of the GT be a pretty decent upgrade from the FX 5900 I am running right now?

I really don't think pci express makes much of a difference on most cards yet (don't quote me on that), but I personally would wait until prices drop before I upgraded.

Read this...

Damn I wish I had a PCI express capable mobo...this is how it always happens, I want to do a simple upgrade and I end up buying 3 new pieces of hardware. :smirk:

My point is that current cards do not fully utilize pci express so there is no reason to upgrade. Yet.

Yeah, I see what you're saying...I will probably wait a while and let the high end PCI cards come out then buy a new mobo, athlon 64, and the card just as they come down from the initial outrageous prices.

Zaz is correct, as of now there is no different in preformance between pci-e and agp video cards of the same kind.

pci-e as now can take advantage of SLI though, of course that is only for richie rich.
