Sleep Paralysis
    #3582350 - 01/05/05 12:09 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone experinced this before?

Last night my sister experinced it about 3 times in a row. Her Dr. claimed it was from the hydrocodon she was on.

About 10 minutes ago I experinced the same exact thing.

I had been meditating for awhile and then decided to go to bed. After awhile im laying there I reliazed I couldn't move or speak and I heard some weird sounds. It absoultley scared the shit out of me.

Its so weird that It happened to me and my sister a night after eachother we are twins which could be a reason.

there was a post here in the pub a while back when someone explained it as your body falls asleep before your mind does. Ill search for it to see if I can find it.

Yah its common to me It dont really shock me anymore it used to scare the shitters out of me. The interesting thing is it used to happen often around the time of the same nights as my g/f that was weird.

Then in the middle of the night one night we researched it on the net and read some asswipes opinion that it was an alien abduction then we found a medical explanation that sounded spot on, here is my brief explanation. "When you sleep in REM your body naturally has a mechanisim/chemical to paralyse you so you dont actually get up and defend yourself from dream fairys/trolls/terrorists or dragons, this like any part of the human body malfunctions.
So dont worry youll get used to it when it happens just relax itll go away faster that way.
I have a theory that if you have too many electrical things operating where you sleep itll happen more.

i get this ALL the time.....maybe 3 or 4 times a week sometimes. usually only lasts a few seconds, but sometimes ive had it last up to about 5 minutes. its weird, cant move, cant even scream for help. i used to freak out when this would happen...but now when it happens i just try to go back to sleep.

as already posted above, your brain paralyzes your body during rem sleep. my brain has a problem controlling this behavior....a sleep specialist told me its cause i have REM behavior sleep disorder. so quite often i wake up and cant move. other times i sleep walk. i dont sleep walk quite as frequently as i get the sleep paralysis, but the times i sleep walk freak me out even more so. one time, i woke up and i was in my car, keys in hand trying to start it. i was using my house key though. another time, as a little kid (about 3 0r 4) i remember waking up to my dad beating my ass.....apparently, he came in to wake me up to go to the bathroom (i had a little bed wetting problem) and instead of going to the bathroom i opened my bottom dresser drawer and started pissing all over my clothes. my dad thought i was awake and doing it to piss him off, so he gave me a spanking. its kinda funny now, but waking up to getting an ass beating was no fun

What triggers this to happen? After it I couldn't get back to sleep because I had feelings of dread that I was gonna get paralyzed again.

I think that was one of the scariest minutes of my life. I couldnt even call out to the person in the room next to me or move to kick the wall to make noise...

I used to get these a lot. They stopped when I was about 19. Some people call them out of body experiences. Other just say your body 'falls asleep before your mind' although that just sounds kinda weird. I'm sure there's a medical explanation for it.

It might be some kind of mild harmless seizure

Check out Robert Bruce's website. He is the author of Astral Dynamics, probably the best book that exists on the subject of astral projection. Here is a quote.

Quote:

Some degree of physical paralysis is a sure sign an OOBE is IN PROGRESS. It shows the mind split, in some form, has already occurred. The physical body has varying degrees of difficulty animating itself when the mind split effect is active. Even though they may not be aware a projection is in progress, a projector's physical/etheric body may feel total physical paralysis, or some degree of lethargy and heaviness and disorientation in their physical body. The degree of this depends greatly upon the strength of the projection and how much energy is being used to maintain it. Strong sensations like these point to an OOBE being in progress.

The degree of paralysis shows the 'strength' of the projection. A full powered Real Time OOBE will cause total physical paralysis (full waking paralysis) while a lighter level of projection can still allow the projector's physical body to stumble to the bathroom - albeit mumbling incoherently and feeling like they are walking on pillows, body fairly numb and fuzzy - but ambulatory all the same.

Waking paralysis (often called sleep paralysis) will also occur where the real time body has been generated 'inside' the physical/etheric body, but actual separation or full projection from the physical/etheric bodies has not occurred. This means a partial projection has occurred, albeit internally, and is causing some degree of waking paralysis. The real time 'projectable double' in this case has not projected completely free of it's physical body. If this is suspected, the projector should relax and let it happen, or use a projection technique like rope. A full projection can then occur if it has not already happened.

Note: Many people are plagued by waking paralysis, and it can indeed be a terrifying experience, capable of causing psychological damage. Waking paralysis can best be broken by concentrating on a single big toe and trying hard to move it. Concentrate 'everything' on moving that big toe. Once this moves, even a tiny bit, full physical movement will be instantly restored.

It's a REM sleep anomaly. During normal REM sleep the spinal neurons that control large muscle movement are inhibited, to keep people from "acting out their dreams". In sleep paralysis the person is already awake but the mechanism is, for some reason, still active.

Its happened me a few times. Its kinda scary, Ive always thought I was being possessed by a ghost until it was brought to my attention that it was only sleep paralysis. This is what happened to me. I thought I was awake but I guess I was half asleep or something. I feel weird vibrations and thats what scares me and I try to get up or open my mouth to scream but I'm paralyzed. I wrote a whole post about it before, its somewhere...

The sounds/visions are called hypnagogic/hypnapompic hallucinations.
Sleep paralysis is common among narcoleptic people, but other people may experience it occasionally. Bad sleep schedules, stress and stimulants may increase your chances of getting a sleep paralysis "attack".

i have sleep paralysis, scariest fucking thing in the world. I get paralized and can't even scream, it happened when I had a terrible cold and my nose was clogged up. I went into the paralysis with my mouth closed and couldn't breath. It freaked the fuck out of me. I've only had hallucinations once from it.

i had no idea sleep paralysis could exist until i looked into lucid dreaming and the sleep cycle. i've induced sleep paralysis a few times by laying down, clearing my head, and concentrating on my breathing. along with practicing lucid dreaming, this came in very handy - as it allowed me to enter a dream being fully lucid. before i knew i could use this technique i had been trying to become lucid while already in a dream.. which can be very hard. if you do suffer from sleep paralysis, why not try to use it to your advantage? lucid dreaming is one of the most fun and exciting activities i've ever encountered - give it a shot

Sounds like you were well on your way to projecting.
If you are lucky enough to be able to experience sleep paralysis, take advantage of it and explore the mind.

I use to get sleep paralysis all the time when I was younger, but it has all faded now. Havent experienced it in a very long time.

A while back I was getting all into this kinda stuff. Trying different ways of dreaming, having OBE's and REM sleeping alot. I had found out how to trigger a lucid dream for me and it worked 100% of the time. I have to get up fairly early in the morning, stay up for a few minutes then go back to sleep. I always end up falling asleep, then waking up (in a dream) in my bed. I always knew I was in a dream but everything around me was exactly the same as when I was awake. I would go outside and my neighborhood was the same, and the people where all there and everything was actually logical. Dreams are never logical for me, but this was just like real life except I knew I was dreaming. It was like a way to go into a fantasy world where I was free to do whatever I wanted with no consequences. Sometimes the dreams were so life like that I wasn't sure if I was dreaming or not. I'd do it just for fun alot, to beat the shit outta my retarted neighbor or go have sex with this one girl down the street... lol. Once I got the idea to go look in the mirror in my dream. If I looked at my hands in front of my face, they seemed normal and quite real. Once I looked in the mirror though it scared the fuck outta me. I actually felt emotion in my dream. I had no reflection, and it scared me. I had this feeling that I wasn't even alive or there at all. When I woke up I realized its cause I wasn't really there, I never was. It was always a dream, a false reality. I've never done it since.

Guess I kinda rambled on there. Back to the subject, I've had sleep paralysis a few times. Usually its while I'm trying to fall asleep, and I'm almost there but then something would pop into my head and wake me up just to enough to where I was conscious, but I would be paralyzed. It could be pretty frightening, especially if you've never experienced it before.

same here i have terrible insomnia.i go weeks at a time without regular sleep. not counting of course when i would pass out/sleep at the dinner table or while brushing my teeth. or sleep for an hour and have no idea where i am or how much time has passed.

i use to have crazy lucid dreams, i was staying with my nana for two weeks sleepingon her couch and i would wake up but couldn't move. the first time i completely flipped out and when i could finnaly react i was screaming my head off. the following time i would realise what was happening and go into freaky lucid dreams. most were of me doing daily things but other were like burrowing through a hole after some small creatures and sheit.
i haven't had them in a while but a control and understanding of what is happening makes it whole lot less creepy and frightening.

this is the only time i could recall feeling my own body [ i guess cuz my hands were on my face] has anyone else felt this b4?
