Insanities south of Canada's border

I think it's absurd to see such high charges for looking at stars with your daughter - the sky ain't free anymore?

That is a little ridiculous, but I don't think his alibi holds much water. How do you use a laser pointer to look at the stars? Please tell me.

You gotta be joking. The laser is like a flashlight. He can point it at whatever he wants. Any hand held laser is the same as a flashlight. I'd say the government owes him a million dollars. Just because they are on a witch hunt does not mean hes guilty. Where is my pocket pointer. I could use a million dollars.

except into the eyes of someone who's trying to operate something like a car, plane, or helicopter. it's a safety hazard.

this seems like it's been blown way of out proportion, but come on. it's pretty stupid to shine a laser at aircraft cockpits. it also has nothing to do with stargazing.

It does, seriously I star/moon gaze and use my $1.99 handheld laser all the time. I use it to pinpoint my telescope to the moon. I have a right to shine anything harmless at anyone I want to. Shining a flashlight in a pilots eyes is less than shining a handheld laser. You can do more damage to america by jumping out in front of a greyhound bus. Wake up mush, you are smarter than this.

can you explain that a little more? what's the technique and what is the purpose?

Don't you know? He can see his laser pointer hit the moon.

You can't zero in on anything without a laser these days, especially a refractor telescope. The thing jumps all over the place with the smallest movement. A laser helps to find your target.
To think its illegal to point a harmless thing around is crazy.

So does pointing it at the sky help? If so what does it reflect off of?

The point is that its harmless. We are not talking about a 1 ton lazer. Its at about that size that they can blind you.

can you explain how you use a laser to pinpoint your telescope? how does it help you zero in on things? what is the actual technique? can you possibly post a link to a description of this technique?

the only thing i could find relating a laser to stargazing was this:

"A powerful laser device called an 'Astro Aimer' will get its inaugural
public showing at Saturday night's star gazing at Charles Darwin
University.

"This special device shines a powerful green beam of light sometimes
kilometres into the sky pinpointing stars and planets easily to audiences.

"It is the most powerful hand held laser device legally available to the
public," said astronomy tutor and organiser Geoff Carr."

emphasis mine. very interesting. i wonder if that was the type of laser he was using. sure sounds like a great sort of thing to be pointing at aircraft cockpits.

I tape mine with duck tape to the outside of the telescope. If you ever looked thru a telescope you'd know its jumps all over the place and its impossible to find what your looking for. But from the observer not looking its easy to see and move the laser to the point. So I point my taped laser to the star and look thru the telescope. Otherwise I'd never find the star.
star=planet

i'm still not getting this. with laser pointers, the beam itself is not visible until it strikes an object. i don't understand how duct taping a laser pointer to your telescope would help you.

Go buy a $99 reflector telescope and try to look at the moon. Everytime you breath the field of vision changes. Take that same telescope and try to see the rings of saturn. Walk out of your house and the vibration moves the telescope. You'll see nothing.

It hits the moon instantly. You can write PEPSI with lasers on the moon. For astronomy you don't need a dildo. Astronomers are hung with 1o" anyway. Its fate.
