I'm thinking of using rye soon but unlike most of the other ingrediants and equips I have no idea where to find the right stuff. I tried some nurseries and such w/ no luck. Am I just looking for grass seed or what? I know this is a silly simple question but to some of you but humor me please. thanx

Rye grain, rye berries, heres a link of what it looks like
http://www.kalyx.com/store/proddetail.cfm/ItemID/55391.0/CategoryID/13500.0/SubCatID/2930.0/file.htm
Health food stores are the #1 place to find it, I found it local for pretty cheap.

OK in US dollars what is a cheap price? because $10 for 5-6lbs seems pricey. Maybe I'm wrong

I use WBS now and it has toomany cracked grains in it so I'm hoping for more consistancy with rye esp. after heating.

My WBS is ok hardly any "crackers" and cheaper then rye. At the EKO-store rye here is about 1,10? a pound. Bout 1,50$. SO 6 pound of "eko-rye" could be 9$, even 10 wouldnt be that pricey HERE.
But when bought in larger quantities prises drop. A millman (with a mill ) sells it for 0,90? a kilo. More then twice as cheap. But its 7? in distance.. (gas price)
So atm I use WBS which goes around about 1? a kilo. (2 pounds) There is also other cheap uncracked grain, food for small parrots (unhulled millet) for example. Much of teh bird seeds can be used imho.
Gluck! MF

Rye is about 80 cents a pound from my local health food store...I think 83 cents...then if you buy 50 pound bags its 10% off. WBS is still cheaper though and much closer (rye consists of about 4 hours of driving) but I love rye.

Good to here from you again friend. I was thinking about just finding one type of grain like you mentioned, but everyone seems to have such good luck with rye. If I find it then I find it, but it looks like bird seed for now.

That would be about $38.00 for a 50lb bag!!! I pay $9.00 CND for 50 lbs. You should look for a feed mill.

Oops..its 27 bucks with tax for a 50 pound bag so that must not be it...maybe it was 53 cents...
No feed mills around here....expensive to ship too......

What I like bout the WBS is the variety of grains in it. Both is only a few hundred meters away from my door but the cheaper rye is bout an hour driving away.
I saw also WBS in 50 pound bags at a store here, and then it was like 0,25? p. pound..... But that quantity... Not yet hey!

I dont have long experience but with WBS I have good colonisation results. Although I can imagine rye being also a good colonisator substrate cause the rye is more easy to penetrate for the mycelium IMHO.
When spawning to bulk WBS/Millet might have the advantage that you have more inoculating points.....
You feel good too NOS!

a verm factory is 45 minutes away from me, it is 13? for 100 liters of verm...
(about 105 quarts)
Many PF cakes and a very thick casing layer can be made out of that!

I dont think there will be less or more contams if you wait with poo. Also I am having troubles with RH in my PMP it seems. Casings dont need that high RH as the cakes. With bulk I can increase the substrate by 4. 1 quart of WBS to 4 quarts of bulk. Actually I did not use the poo, I thought it still smelled to much ammonia after the soak. So I pasteurized plain straw instead and spawned a quart of WBS B+ to it. My first straw grow! Good luck with your things, MF

Shells and broken grains are not a problem , unless happening becasue too wet and exploding in the pc , or if more than 30% broken prior to pcing . If that keeps happening to you after pc ing it is becasue you are allowing too much water to be absorbed into the grain , not draining properly after soaking . GL
