Plastic lids

I was just wondering how much luck people have had using the solid white plastic lids on Grain to Grain jars. From what I read in the Mush Cult air exchange is not necessary durring incubation and it would seem these would hold back all the contams.

Air exchange is not needed but the myc must be able to get rid of gasses during incubation.

Plastic lids work great. Gas exchange is a MUST. Drill two (2) 1/4 ince holes w/sharp bit in lid (hint, upside down on a board, or old phone book - so lids don't crack). Use TYVEK as filter material UNDER plastic lid. Inject through 1 hole & tape over. Metal lid, but same holes & tyvek

TYVEK worked a thousand times +++ for my FOAF. It is a standard medium for gas exchange - in this community.

Those white plastic lids are the only ones I use for all jars. One hole, 5 hole and solids. They work great.

You can also rig plastic lids with a full time filter.

Yeah, the metal lids do rust. That is the reason I use plastic. Easy to drill too. I'm pretty sure I've got them at WalMart before, but any store that carries a good selection of canning supplies should have them.

Hey they have great prices on snowblowers!!!lol OK you sparked my interest with those built ins but still seems complicated as far as cleaning. I spend so much time cleaning that when I get the last thing cleaned it's time to clean the first.lol Is that tyvek in the built-ins I saw some of those heater register filters at a hardware store what do you think of those as filter media? Thanx again

Simply throw dirty lids in a hot water & disinfectant soak - overnight, then run through dishwasher. Some are TYVEK, I think one is a ceramic filter. Furnace & air duct filters WILL NOT WORK, in jar applications.

You seem pretty certain THEY wont work is it because of the handling (cutting/flattening) they recieve? Also as long as we're on the topic, My Vicks cool mist has one of those filter units that fit on the intake. Well I noticed it was a bit icky on the backside so I soaked it overnight in a heavy bleach water solution, and then today I boiled it for approx 1/2 hour and fan dried. Do you think I adequately decontamed it?

You should change the filter on that cool mist every 2 - 3 months. They are only 4 bucks.
