Electronica.
Especially psy-trance, psy-ambient, psy-dub.
Acts like:
Shpongle Shulman Entheogenic Phutureprimitive Bluetech Younger Brother Ott Shakatura
and then I always make sure to throw in Ozric Tentacles. Can't ever get enough of those guys, especially tripping. They're music is made for tripping.

I like tripping to Devin Townsend. His stuff is just amazing whilst tripping and it is just so euphoric. I find it beautiful and relaxing. It is very intense music, but extremely peacefull. Especially his album Terria, which is latin for i think nature. It has a very naturistic theme.
Other things i listen to would include Steve Vai Ayreon Grateful Dead and some other random ambient, techno, and digital recordings. Im not much of a fan of this stuff, but once in a while it makes a good trip.

Crazy Shroom Man...I saw Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains in concert while tripping. AMAZING show...the is an incredible bassist. And Buckethead is really sick on the guitar.

I like to listen to just acoustic stuff, or like slow guitar solos. Sometimes some Ben Harper or Coldplay too. Alot of The Beatles stuff is good. An awesome tripping song I listened to over and over some 20 or more times on my last trip is A Tear for Eddie by Ween. Its awesome.

Colonel Claypool rocks! (So do Primus) "So if you give him half a chance He'll surely impress you with his dance And maybe reach down in your pants And give you a little old greasy romance" - Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, "Junior". Also, Butthole Surfers, Ministry, and anything that Gibby Haynes has had anything to do with.

My last trip I played all the modest mouse CDs from my ipod and it was great, very mellow, some of the songs are high strung but its ok, I didn't even notice.

WEEN - try the "chocolate and chesse" album.
these guys are a trip. these guys were making me trip so hard that i had to tell my friend to shut it off the stereo cause i was going to throw up . good times.
alot of you les claypool fans should check out victor wooten. this guy blow les away anyday. BASS IN YOUR FACE SON!
every time i listen to claypool, i feel like im being cheated. i know he's a good bass player but at times he's a tease. its like "do you know how to play the bass or what?" now i know where the "primus sucks" expression came from.

I'd also suggest Book M by Secret Chiefs 3. Amazing album. Just the thought of it is enough to warp my mind.

I am listening to Ween and just went to their web-site to read that they are cancelling their tour dates because one of the members has hit rock-bottom or something. Just listening to the music tells you something about that crazy band. "Marble Tulip Juicy Tree" had me in stitches. Those guys have definitely lost all of their collective consciousness'

No one ever heard the Coil group from Neatherlands? They made bunch of music ON halucinogens! They have the trippest music ever made... But some tracks are really hard while tripping. Besides: the Beatles, the Doors, Hallucinogen, the Nature itself, T of N, and MANY tracks of various groups.

The best thing to listen to is Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. Turn off all lights and unplug everything, and light a couple of candles. It's by far the best thing ever. It will take you to another world, if the mushrooms already haven't.

well, i'm the exact opposite of ALL of you. when I trip.. well, first off, let me say i've never experienced a "bad trip." however, fear and anxiety, and that sense of not knowing what's next is what i really love about tripping. that usually involves a dark room and some death/black metal. word.

Tool, specifically the albums Lateralus and Aenima. And even more specifically, the songs "Parabola", "Third Eye", "Stink Fist", I could go on...
And as many know, Tool uses psychadelics ( ) to spawn their mind delving lyrics. I'm tired of all these bullshit bands that just talk about sex and money. Tool sings about what actually matters.

Are you sure they use psychadelics? I would not be surprised in the least, but I have never actually heard that. Although the song "Third Eye" does make reference to peyote. Where have you heard any of their stance on drugs? I could never find if those guys were down or not. My favorite band by far I just have never heard any of them admitting to it.

Well, Tool has said in interviews that psychedelics are a powerful tool to discover spirituality and consciousness, but I also remember hearing Maynard say that he doesn't trip anymore, that he has found music to be the non-drug means to achieve the same enlightened mind-state as under a psychedelic.

Incubus has got some good stuff out now. This live stuff there is now is great. Boyds lyrics are grrreat and Mikey jams that guitar. Kinda like natural disasters occuring right under your feet or something, in the form of waves.. you just gotta go there.
You cant go wrong with a little Panic in your trip though.

Grateful Dead is by far the best music to trip to. I reccomend some 73 or late 60's.

Can I recommend you not listen to Aphex Twin? I heard a song- Windowlicker and it was positively irritating. Just me maybe
I have been finding that Indian music has been wonderful. In particular DJ CHeb I Sabbah, Nitin Sawhney and others like these. It gave me interesting visuals of lotus flowers and Shiva-like Dieties. Very peaceful and yet very engaging.

We set it to random and let the mood move the music. It always seems that when we are tripping we need only think about a song and it will play.
this all just seems like music you'd listen to NORMALLY...which is not always the best music to have on while tripping. but come on...three doors down? celine dion? sarah mclaughlan? I would think these would be SERIOUS DOWNERS while tripping...almost dangerous. They sing mostly about love songs, a lot about depressing losses, etc. These songs are meant to make you feel good but not under the influence of a psychoactive chemical as strong psilocybin. To add to that, I don't prefer any music that typical teenage girls would listen to. Everyone has their own musical tastes of course, so please don't take offense. I've just found that listening to internet radio stations like www.di.fm (digitally imported - electronica music in many genres, I prefer goa/psytrance for tripping) is the best way to go because you'll always hear songs you've never heard and I think if you listen to the same music every time you trip you'll end up feeling bored by it. just my 2 cents some artists I also enjoy listening to while tripping, in no particular order: the beatles pink floyd the grateful dead moe. (excellent band, if you've never heard of them check out moe.org) the flaming lips infected mushroom (these guys rule the psychedelic trance genre) the new deal anything light and ambient is perfect too. sometimes techno is too much too quick. if this seems to start happening, switch it up with some jazz or light rock and you'll feel a world of difference.

For me, it's Lewis Taylor all the way, then Floyd and Pepper-era Beatles.
Last trip, I was trying to carry on a conversation while listening to Strawberry Fields Forever, and I kept getting pulled into the music. If I paid even the slightest bit of attention to the music, it was my whole world...

I remember tripping and listening to Bob Marley and pondering how his lyrics could sometimes be depressing while the music was totally uplifting. It's kinda weird to think about to me. Could be good or bad, depending how you look at it.
For electronic fans out there, I recommend Aphex Twin because of all the complex patterns... I've had fractal rainbow CEVs go with the music that were incredible. Richard D. James album was actually a really good call by whoever mentioned that... 26 Mixes for Cash, and Drukqs are also good albums if you program out a lot of the BS tracks that tend to come with Aphex Twin. and to whoever said Windowlicker was irritating, try watching the Windowlicker video while tripping (wink, wink). Also highly recommended is a band called Download (former Skinny Puppy member, and Phil Western) the albums III, and Effector. Despite having a member of Skinny Puppy they are pretty much the opposite vibe of Skinny Puppy. Another band with those same mebers is called Plateau...the albums Music for Grassbars and Spacecake are pretty much priceless to me. Richard Devine is also another artist making pretty intensely complex electronic music, though his themes tend to be a bit darker I still find them highly enjoyable.
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works volumes Aphex Twin - 26 Mixes for Cash Aphex Twin - Drukqs Download - III Download - Effector Cevin Key - The Ghost of Each Room Cevin Key - Music for Cats Plateau - Music for Grassbars Plateau - Spacecake Richard Devine - Asect:Dsect
If people know more music along these lines please let me know! And if anyone is interested in checking these albums out then PM me and I can get some mp3s to you easily, because some of these albums are extremely hard to find (not because they're bad...you know how the music industry goes).

My favourite bands/albums to listen to whilst tripping are:
Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Yo la Tengo - And then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out Royksopp - Melody AM Beta Band - The 3 EPs Portishead - Dummy
Although anything as long as it's not too heavy or commercially poppy normally sounds like the best music ever whilst tripping...

Here are some obvious selections (atleast for me)
Mark Farina-Mushroom jazz vol. I-V Marcus Intalex Sound Tribe Strut Old School Drum and Bass (Ragga)
Also, if you are home alone and looking for some good beats go to BBC's Radio1( www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/essentialmix/ ) and check out their essential mixes. They take the cream of electronica and give them 2 hr sets!

Music is always an important element in the trip: For me some of the best tripping songs are those with a diversity of samples, sounds and words that can provoke your brain and take it on unexpected tangents. I try and steer clear of dark or chaotic songs while tripping ( Aphex Twin, some Amon Tobin). Downtempo: Soft and mysterious beats create an atmosphere of wonder (great for nature walks).Diverse Samples used. Trance/House(proggressive ,hard): soaring vocals and rolling bass lift you into bliss.
If this sounds like the kind of experience you're looking for check out these artists:
Beats with samples/downtempo/ mystery: Verbrilli Sounds Blue States The Herbaliser Zero 7 Nightmares on Wax Thievery Corporation Kid Loco Lemon Jelly (suggest Ramblin Man, space walk) Amon Tobin (get Natureland) Boom Bip (U MUST GET: ROADS MUST ROLL)DJ Cam DJ Food Deeper Concentration 9 Lazy 9 Deadbeats Rinycyryse
Also, check out shoutcast.com for internet radio listening; with a stream ripper you can accumulate great tripping music from the downtempo genre stations: BeatBlender, LoungeRadio, BuzzoutRoom, Grooveplay
Euphoric/ vocal House: Dumonde ( djs: jam x and De Leone) Syntax
For a real funny bizarre mind f*ck, download some Chris Morris tracks. Its not really music but you will laugh till convulsions.
PM me for other suggestions to numerous to mention, Will trade: burned dvds filled with Downtempo, House/Trance or Dub meticulously organized from my abundant collection.

We listened to quite a few good albums last time me and a few others were tripping:
Moody Blues - Days of the Future Passed - More specifically, the songs 'Tuesday Afternoon' and 'Nights in White Satin'.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland - What can I say? There's some kick ass, trippy songs on this album... definitely worth listening to songs like '1983...' and 'Burning of the Midnight Lamp'.
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon - This literally induced some kick ass visuals; the wallpaper transformed into green little Buddhas which started dancing for me.
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper and the Lonely Hearts Club Band - Another trippy album. Listened to the song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (LSD, anyone?).
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced - Hendrix again. Most the songs are interesting, even the purely instrumental ones. 'Waterfall' has quite a slow tempo and it's the one I remembered best.
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak - Not sure why we had this. Was a cool listen but couldn't really compare to the others. It's more something I would listen to while sober.
Motorhead - Ace of Spades - Haha, see above. This was just ridiculous. We had to turn it off because this one guy ran out of the room.
Grateful Dead - American Beauty - A very cool album to trip to.
Peace

I really like David and Steve Gordon. Particularly Sacred Earth Drums and The Heart of Peace. I also like Zingaia a LOT, especially Dancers of Twilight.
If anyone is interested, let me know, and I will post up a couple samples. Really mellow stuff.

In my humble opinion there is no such thing as the best tripping music. It's all about what music the particular person likes. Whatever you like will trip you out better than anything else

OK, here are a few: Zingaia: "She Beckons" from the album "Beneath the Veil" David and Steve Gordon: "Flow of Harmony" from the album "The Heart of Peace" (Long, but worth it, 12mb at medium quality, it's a long relaxing thing.) David and Steve Gordon: "Return Journey" from "Sacred Earth Drums" a super relaxing "coming down" song...just to hug (if your tripping partner is your hugging partner) or sit and contemplate. Nice.
The quality of these are not the best because I compressed them, as they are a LOT bigger, when they are the originals from eMusic. Like, the middle one, which is 12mb, is 41mb in the original from e-music.
I happened to go and see e-Music once, and I LOVED sniffing around in all the *who are these people* music, that I bought a membership...not to be a commercial or anything, but I have a lot more cool stuff now, than I had before, which is perfect for both mental travel and normal (unassisted) meditation.
If you want more album names from the same, or some other names of cool stuff to look for over there in the same genre, just let me know!
Enjoy!

See to me (personal opinion only), even though I love GnR, it's tooooo HARSH for tripping. I like more transcendant stuff in my ears at that time.

Exactly. Even though I lov e lots of different music, there is some I just PREFER for tripping and/or meditation and not really for any other time and then other music that I think would make me puke if I were tripping, like anything harsh or screechy would make me sick to my stomach, I think, and irritable...esp. while coming up.

My favorite tripping bands in no particular order:
Infected Mushroom Mogwai Shpongle Green Day (yeah, you better believe it) Bloodhound Gang (only a few select tracks, like Hell Yeah) Pink Floyd Jimi Hendrix Ratatat Aes Dana Abakus Andrew W.K.
You can't really go wrong with a song from any of those groups. Although Mogwai is kinda hit or miss, Come on Die Young was a perfect album to provide background to any psychadelic/rolling chill-out conversation session.
My $0.02 anyhow...

I've noticed there isn't much representation in this thread for Acid House and Rave/Dance electronica. I love Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, etc. to death but if you're looking for an energetic vibe for a trip, I have some suggestions here that may interest you.
(Albums)
Daft Punk - Homework (1997) - Best Tracks: Da Funk; Around the World; Phoenix; Rollin' & Scratchin'; High Fidelity; Alive; Burnin'; Indo Silver Club; Oh Yeah
Daft Punk - Discovery (2001) - Best Tracks: Aerodynamic; Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger; Voyager; Verdis Quo; Short Circuit
Orbital - Orbital 2 (1993) - Best Tracks: Planet of the Shapes; Lush 3.1; Lush 3.2; Impact (The Earth is Burning); Remind; Halcyon + on + on (Everyone probably recognizes this song)
The Prodigy - Experience (1992) - Best Tracks: Jericho; Wind it Up; Hyperspeed (G-Force Part 2); Charly (Trip into Drum & Bass); Out of Space
The Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation (1994) - Best Tracks: Break & Enter; Full Throttle; Voodoo People; The Heat (The Energy); No Good (Start the Dance); One Love (Edit); Skylined; Claustrophobic Sting
Other great Orbital tracks:
Belfast Illuminate Little Fluffy Clouds Acid Pants Are we here? I wish I had Duck Feet The Box One Perfect Sunrise
And, a song by the Crystal Method:
Trip Like I do (Edit: From the album "Vegas [Australia Only Edition]" - make sure it's 7:35 in length)
-----------------------
Won't hurt your music collection any to add those songs!

damn, where do I start? anything by Simon Posford is a good choice for an intense trip, whether it's Shpongle, Hallucinogen ("In Dub" - the best album, IMO), Younger Brother, Celtic Cross or Mystery of the Yeti. Simon has shown me every corner of my brain and supposedly "In Dub" took my cousin to another world, yes literally.
another one of my favorites is The Disco Biscuits, you can listen to just about any of their shows at www.archive.org. the best thing about Bisco is that they never play a song the same way twice and they connect many of their songs without stopping the beat (I think it's called a segueway). either you'll love em or hate em
just about any 'jamband' is excellent to see live and trippin. the ones I've had the pleasure of seeing live are the String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Keller Williams, Gov't Mule, Infected Mushroom, Bassnectar, EOTO, The Schwag (Grateful Dead tribute), DJ Shadow, BoomBox (DJ + electric guitar, some people can't stand it but I love it , Pnuma Trio, Xavier Rudd, Greyboy Allstars, DUBCONSCIOUS!!, Umphrey's McGee and STS9. I'm sure there are others that my coked out, ope'd out, drunk self can't remember.
NO! I'm nowhere close to done.. in another similar post Cervantes mentioned a few that I feel are very worthy of repeating. Addison Groove Project, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe (or any tight funk band for that matter), Bela Fleck, The Beatles (of course), Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Chemical Brothers, Medeski Martin & Wood, The Orb, Ott, Particle, Phish (every time I listen to 'Reba' my mind gets thrown into the recipe , PINK muthafuckin FLOYD, and Yes.
you should also check out Rick Wakeman's album Journey to the Centre of the Earth. after I name a few more I'll be done, trust me. MO2 a.k.a Mind Orchestra, Ween, moe., Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, Perpetual Groove (listen to 'Crockett and Tubbs'), Easy Star All Stars (best known for "Dub Side of the Moon"), The New Deal, 1200 Micrograms (hence, the name , Big Organ Trio, Psychedelic Breakfast a.k.a The Breakfast, Dark Star Orchestra, Natural Breakdown, Little Feat, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, sub-ID, Tea Leaf Green, and Yonder Mountain String Band are all great for trippin.

I like old threads.
How about making your own music while trippin'.
Or Fourtet.
-------------------- A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

I personally think it depends on what you're tripping on. Certain bands act completely different for me while on shrooms ratherthan on acid for example. Either way, I always enjoy listening to Ravi Shankar..and Strawberry Alarm Clock =)
