Symptoms of too much light?
    #3579214 - 01/04/05 01:52 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Hi,

I've seen various advice about daily lighting duration. What clue would make you look at a grow and say "Holy crap. You must be leaving your light on 24/7!"?

I'm not asking about light intensity here. Just duty cycle.

Thanks.

Thanks Agar. That's what most people here say, and I don't dispute it.

As I see it, light is your pinning trigger. It lets the mycelium know that it's reached the outside of the pewp pile. No sense fruiting in the middle. Fruits also grow sort of in the direction of the light. That makes sense, because it would want to head for open space, and not smack into a log or something.

So without some light I would expect to see little or no pinning.

But what about too much light? If you live in Alaska where the sun shines for months, do you have to cover your windows for half a day? How, exactly, will mushrooms respond to more than the recommended dosage?

Thanks,

I have left mine on during the pinning process for 24/7 before to see what would happen.

I noticed more pins, actually alot more pins, but they matured to fast and all opened there veils when they were still very small. So I probably ended up with more mushes but a lot less in weight.

I have no clue if this is because of the 24/7 light, I was only guessing and have never tried it again.

Light on 24/7:

Take a close look and notice all the pins

Same strain, chamber, substrate, casing...but light on for 12-18 hours a day for pinning and 2-6 hours once pinset in:

You be the judge.

24h light is fine - looky here (by anno): http://www.fungifun.org/shrooms.avi

light is a pinning trigger, and cubensis is phototropic (they frow toward the light) but i'm pretty sure that after pinning they can grow to maturity in total darkness.....

anyone?

I'd bet they could grow in total darkness once they pin..I havnt tried though.. I have found that 24 hour light once pinning, I got more aborts and shrooms that grow very quickly and thin and then open up the caps sooner..with more darkness the mushrooms grew a little slower but many more pins matured and they grew thicker and overall bigger.

That link doesnt play for me, is it just me?

I was able to view the video. Very nice to see it all happen, instead of just peeking now and then.

The pictures that scatmanrav posted suggest that 24/7 light results in an uneven flush with a lot of aborts.

To my untrained eye, the video shows the same thing. In the left foreground is an area that's barren. In the right foreground are a lot of pins that never took off.

I don't know if the video shows a typical grow, never having done a casing myself. The movie would have been so much more telling had it been 2 grows, side by side, with light being the only difference. One day I hope to do just that.

In the mean time, I'm going to cycle my light like almost everyone else. Thanks all for your replies. This is a great resource.

I can say that yes shrooms do continue to grow... For some reason my whole growkit isn't covered in myc. so i put it back in the dark and pinheads kept growing.

Actually, I had no light whatsoever and the edge of my kit still started growing pinheads. Pretty weird, kinda fucked things up for my grow but whatever I'll do better on my 2nd go . I got one shroom that grew bigger than my hand, while the rest are still quite small, and it grew in total darkness, so question:
Does it need light for the veil to tear?
