a problem with coffee
    #3579189 - 01/04/05 01:42 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

ok background: birdseed jars that i've made a hundred times..this time i added coffee grounds. Put woodlover mycilia on it nothing grew so i figured the mycelia was old..In the same jar i added another wood lover's spores...so as not to waste...Nothing. so i think maybe spores are old...made up an especially dark spore solution and added it to the same jar. AND NOTHING. not cotams either

woudl they maybe put fungicides in coffee for preservation of some kind. are they're even any fungicides that survive the heat of pressure cooking?

there are other jars of the same mixture i've added only myc to...i'm thinking i'll open one up and let it sit for awhile, then close it up and see if i even get contams.

It's something completely new to me. I mean even if the wood lovers don't like the coffee they still love the seed. Its only a small amount it shouldn't harm them, they'd just grow around it.
i just can't figure it out

There's a HUGE "coffee project" thread already going in adv cult.
Your input would probably be more valuable there.

Woodlovers like birdseed? I dont get it, birdseed is a whole grain not wood..

Forgive me if it is stupid and woodlovers do really like birdseed but I have to make sure its not a basic mistake..Im not a wood lover person so can't help much other then that.

I dont believe there are any fungicides in coffee but its possible. Next time try soaking in 50% water and 50% coffee and simmer in that (if you do) as well. That might do you better then coffee grounds.

Coffee could also be to acidic for them?

well first of all woodlovers will grow on birdseed. I'm not entirely sure if they will fruit. The general concensus the last i heard was that they will not. But anyway i wasn't fruiting them. I have grown on that exact birdseed before and had no problems. So i have eliminated teh possibility that the birdseed is the problem.

Secondly, coffee soak and simmer looks great, and i might try it someday. But it isn't really what i'm looking for

Spent coffee grounds are often sold to mushroom cultivation companies for addition to substrate. A friend of mine gets bags and bags from local starbucks. I however used cheap grounds that were fresh and i was wondering if anyone knew of anything in the grounds that could keep fungus from growing on them. I've never heard of any problems with coffee grounds, i mean they're used in commercial cultivation.

But coffee is grown in such distributed areas by local farmers and later bought by larger distributers that these family operations aren't usually subject to overseers (they often grow coca as well) so even thought i kind of doubt it it could be that some spray their coffee
anyways...nevermind

oh and that coffee thread is entirely too long and mostly filled with useless info.

edited for typos

Another thing is every species will be different. Coffee grounds arent used for every species in commercial growing..only certain ones benifit more from it...cubies were found too as well but as far as I know coffee hasnt been tried with wood loving psilocybes. If you grow cubies...try your technique with cubies and see how they work...though pH would still be a thought if it were me...sorry I can't help more..I've read the whole coffee thread and alot of other info on it but I have very little experience with any mushrooms other then cubies..

One thing to take into concideration... flavored coffee. They are mostly flavored with chemicals, possibly also treated with a mild natural fungicide (humanly safe for consumption.) That would extend storage.

I would ensure that the grounds are well spent. (Boil and drain prior to use.)

Also insure that the spores you are trying to grow love coffee. (Sounds like they don't)

Known coffee lovers are, (Oysters, buttons, portabella, cubies)

Do some more research, if you don't find anything, it would be safe to assume that you have found that XXX doesn't like coffee!

you shifted your ph too much. it's that simple. if you still want to do this experiment, try adding some gypsum to the substrate next time and check the ph with a strip/meter.
