PH / DH of horse poo
    #3579036 - 01/04/05 12:56 PM (12 years, 19 days ago)

Hello

Currently I am soaking some horse poo (was not very fresh but rather fresh I guess) and a bit of straw.

Tomorrow Id like to spawn colonized B+ grains to it.

Q: Should I add any "crushed oyster shells" or other source of calcium to the poo-substrate?

Thanks.

MF

If you can? TEST the PH of it. Then - adjust if it is way off. It should be around 7.5. -between 7 & 8

Atm I cannot test the PH. :frown:
I know that coir has higher PH then peat. So in a casing layer with peat more calcium should be added.

Now what are common PH-ranges of leeched horsepoo?

In the teks I dont see people adding calcium to the poo but maybe they just dont mention it or mayeb the poo-PH is just perfect?

PH of POO from differing sources, DIFFERS. Simply because of differing bovines & what the feed was, straw/grass ratio, how long it was exposed to the weather, so on & so forth.

Heey agar I dont wanna hear that!

Shit that I threw away my old aquarium PH-testset....

But I have to make a guess then, and since I never read about people adding calcium to the poo I have decided to add some calcium to the poo!

HOT NEWS  actually I read that commercial growers, add gypsum to the compost, but also chickenshit is added wich is rather acid. Maybe no chickenshit = no extra calciumneed..... On another site I read that horsepoo has more or less neutral PH. Which is 7.
With adding a little calcium I might move it in the direction of 7,5! So I still am gonna add some calcium...

Edit: On a horsesite I read that ideal Ph of horsepoo = 6,5 - 7,0. Thats a sign its a healthy horse.

So the health of the horse is something else which affects the PH of his poo. Normally one should always add calcium to horsepoo. Also cause the horse gets rid of its calcium by piss not by poo.

Buttt in the end the best is to: Measure the PH cause it can differ a lot! Maybe I go to the grocery tomorrow (must baby sit so dont know how I will be able but well see) and buy some "lakmoes" paper. To test PH with...
